Nice review, know. I wonder what their setlist will look like at a festival. It looks like they'll play "Tractor Rape Chain" and "Game of Pricks" and "Shocker in Gloomtown," (whose sonic mysteries I still haven't unlocked.) I would kill for "Echoes Myron" and "Redmen and Their Wives."

What were the encores at your show, if you remember?

Just to add to know's review, the reason the last option of the poll is "depends on how much alcohol bob passes out" is because sometimes he hands that bottle of tequila to the audience. At the Seattle show my friend finished it off and kept the red cup as a souvenir.

Sorry Drew, I was not a GBV superfan prior to the show, I hadn't heard many songs they played. As evident in the review, by the end of the show, I was pretty wasted, so I don't know what songs they were playing.

Just checking a handful of their setlists, they haven't played a show with under 30 songs, and most go over 40 with multiple encores. It'd be a goddamn travesty if they played a 50 minute set at 3 in the afternoon.

Yeah I was looking at setlists. I mean, no GBV songs are really very long, but to only hear like 15 of them would be disgusting. Pollard has a whole album of just stage banter.

Know ID yuh - "Just like how pornography makes you horny, watching someone get shit-faced drunk makes you thirsty. That would be the theme this night." What a fun into. don't think I need to read anymore...but I will.

This write-up has convinced me to watch GbV. (I may not even bother to explore their discography before going)

Does anyone have any recommendations on albums to start with to become familiar with GBV?

Okay...here goes...

Bee Thousand. Alien Lanes. Under the Bushes Under the Stars.

Guided by Voices (Robert Pollard and whoever is playing with him, this time Tobin Sprout, Mitch and some other dudes) have made a whole lot of music, like, Lil Wayne numbers. It's tough to digest. But in a way it's sort of easy to digest in this situation, because Bob said they're playing stuff from their heyday, which is basically those three albums.

They (hopefully) will play more popular stuff from other stages, but that's definitely the starting point. From there I would do all the studio albums, starting with Devil Between My Toes. Some of that shit's hard to track down. There are also hundreds of self-released albums, eps, compilation tracks, b-sides, etc.

Fuck, I need to just make a GBV playlist. That's on my agenda when I get my computer back from the shop.

Sorry, I missed this. I hear nothing but good things about these guys and I don't want it to be one of those acts that I don't see because I don't know them, only to proceed to get into the band after the festival. That is the worst thing ever.

That is always a bummer. Happened to me a few years ago when I missed Be Your Own Pet at Coachella, then I fell in love with their album, and now they are no more. This will likely be your only chance to see GBV so check out as much as possible!

need a place to start on them. a top two album suggestion would be nice and do you think getting their greatest hits album for a quick crash course is a bad idea?

I would also recommend "Isolation Drills" as a good starting point as well. I saw them at Matador 21 last fall and it was awesome. I'm pretty sure they played all of Bee Thousand. I went nuts for Hot Freaks. Hoping for a little further along the catalogue this time.
