Yep. Wonk had convinced me of his argument until last night's game. I watched probably 6-8 games with replacement officials, and I regularly saw calls that I thought were horrible. But I thought it was because I was so focused on the officiating, and that I must have always felt this way but didn't bother to remember.

But watching last night's game...nope. It was just better officiated, control was established, calls were timely, the right calls were usually made and the refs KNEW THE RULES. It was night and day.

Remember, these replacements were refs who couldn't get D1 college jobs, or CFL jobs, or in some cases Lingerie League jobs. They were actually just way less experienced and not as good as hundreds of other football referees in the country, just way more available. I think this is a case where the ESPN hyperbole was pretty much spot on - the replacements sucked ass, and the new refs are 2000% better.

In b4 wonk comments on the GB/NO game.

The one true bad call that I saw was the fumble, which would have easily been reversed if GB had not have wasted both of their challenges on stupid shit.

The Graham catch for a first down that was reviewed and still upheld was iffy as well.

Yeah, that call was bull shit, also the clear fumble that they called down by contact in that game.

I've been away today, and just finished the A's game (holy shit), so I'm just starting the NO/GB game. I just watched an obvious offensive pass interference (Colston) go uncalled for the first Saints TD of the game. I'm not one to say I told you so, but it's at least fair we scrutinize the regulars as much as we scrutinized the replacements, because part of my point was that people forget regular refs also suck (even if they suck less). That's why I said:

Yeah, that was really bad. I'm watching most of the game in fast forward so I can finish the Eagles game before midnight, so I'm not doing a great job of critiquing the refs play by play, but that was horrible.

Yeah I watched the whole game. Everything we called out were the bad ones. Forgot about that Colston push off in the end zone. Refs had a hard on for Green Bay today.

Sure they missed the fumble. Refs miss calls. Before that happened, I kept thinking, "one thing the regulars have on the replacements is they are not afraid to push players around in a scrum, but damn, they are going to get hurt in there." Sure enough, a couple minutes later, that fumble happened, and the hat-less ref who spent a couple seconds screaming at Clay Matthews said, "Call on the field stands."

The problem with that play is that the refs never made a call on who recovered it. It was almost like the head ref decided, "we don't know who recovered it, and some GB fuck just knocked my hat off, so the call on the field stands." Even if GB had a challenge, how do you challenge a play without a clear recovery?

I had the same anxiety watching every play after that fumble as I did watching the replacements when they lost control of the game on a questionable call. Every call or non-call over the next five minutes was questionable (there was a Dr. Garbanzoht the next play with Woodsen, and two plays later a LB leveled Sproles like he was blocking him, even though Sproles was the intended receiver, no call).

Don't worry guys, I'm not going to spend the next ten weeks calling out every bad call a ref makes. It's lame, and I think the better team usually wins, regardless of the refs. I was just chaffed about what I've spent three weeks explaining, and it's not me "hating the refs."

At least the biggest idiot from the conclusion of the Eagles game was Chris Collinsworth. That guy is like a 70 year-old with dementia who thinks he understands football better than everyone because he has two memories of playing the sport.

EDIT: Maybe Vick is a bigger idiot for basically saying his coach is an idiot for icing the kicker.

I'm not sure that this was a mistake though. If the call on the field is the runner is down, why would you say "in the alternative, GB grabbed the ball."

Don't get me wrong, it was a botched call but I just don't think there was anything they could do once they made the initial mistake.
