I guess I just feel like there are bigger problems than your ability to get to work tomorrow. The protest on the bridge is not a DIRECT VIOLATION. It's to bring attention to the fact that the steel bridge is overdue for repairs/general maintenance and the city of portland refuses to hire any number of it's unemployed to do it. I think you're confusing a small step in the process for an expression of the overall message. I don't know who you are or where you get your information, but what I've experienced first hand is radically different than what DIRECT VIOLATION the media has portrayed. Your comments sound like regurgitations of media lies. I'm not a fake poster. I've been to Sasquatch! every year since 2008. I've posted on this board numerous times under another name. Whatever that has to do with anything. You keep thinking this will go away, but this isn't a DIRECT VIOLATION in the continued system of revolution. It's an attempt to come together and create a revolutionary system. This is the only way for an actual representation of the american people to accomplish that in a government that has pigeonholed them into one of two broad categories. If you don't feel represented by the movement, I promise, it's really easy to go and represent yourself. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the the fed uses your tax dollar for things far more atrocious than renovations to a park.

there's something very familiar about this guy. i just can't quite place where I've heard him before.

Not for me. My job supports my household and if I were to lose it I would be one of the homeless population that is so in need of help. Me getting to work on time really is a big problem. I have ideals too, but I don't try to act like my personal welfare and that of my family is less important.

And Dr. Garbanzo, good on you for continuing to work with the movement. I am glad to know that not all parts of this are going wrong like it did here. I am a huge supporter of passive resistance and I salute you for doing it right.

The cops ended up shutting down the Steel bridge to pedistrians and bikers at 4 am, so the trains were unaffected.

Just wanted to throw my two cents in. I, too commend you Dr. Garbanzo for standing up to be counted. Non-violent, direct action and actually USING your freedom of speech are a great way to get a message to the powers that be. Lord knows congress doesn't read your letters anymore.

I was involved in forest activism in the pacific northwest in the years after the Biscuit fire when the Bush administration was using "salvage logging" as an excuse to extract up to 3 BILLION board feet of timber from the Siskiyou National Forest. Through direct action, we were able to get our message out through the media, to bring supporters to our cause, to expand judicial action against the timber companies and timber sales and to reduce substantially the dammage done to 500,000 acres of forest including 180,000 acres of the roadless Kalmiopsis wilderness.

In any movement, there are some actions which are very effective and others which are not so effective and can end up having the opposite effects than those intended. For instance, though I'm not involved in any way with Occupy Portland, it seems as though the planned (now defunct) bridge occupation was intended to draw attention to the crumbling infrastructure and to garner attention and tax dollars to support that infrastructure. However, from what I hear from the Portland boardies - though just a small subset of the Portland population - is that the only real effect would have been to sway popular opinion AWAY from the cause. This is not usually recommended (I say with the utmost lack of sarcasm).

In regards to the message (that seems to be lost, though it rings clear as day whenever I speak with occupiers myself). In my limited interaction with Occupy SF, I have found most people within the movement have two main goals: 1. to get the money out of politics, and 2. to hold the banks accountable for their risky behavior. These messages are simple, to the point and are a great "mission statement" of sorts for Occupy. Obviously there are multiple facets to each of these goals, such as limiting private and corporate campaign financing, changing rules on lobbying, reinstating Glass-Steagall, repealing the Graham-Leach-Bliley act of 1999, and putting more extensive rules on the derivatives market (which now exceeds global GDP by more than 10-fold). Nonetheless, the main goals remain the same.

I think the important thing to remember - for Occupiers, their supporters AND their detractors - is that, in general, the media focuses not on the message of the occupiers, but on their ACTIONS. For instance in Oakland, where they had tens of thousands of protesters peacefully observing their right to freedom of speech and a few dozen "anarchist" vandals stealing the spotlight, the media is going to focus on the sensationalist story. The peaceful, well-read, heart and soul of this movement is often drowned out by the overzealous, rebellious idiots who want to "stick it to the man" and to "party because there's, like, a revolution, man."

Well planned, Direct action that speaks to the community at large AND gets your message out clearly and succinctly is the best way to affect change. Best of luck Dr. Garbanzo, as well as those members of the community who are inconvenienced by the occupy movement.

Wow. I wasn't expecting that to be so long. Carry on.

My friend got yelled at by Occupiers today when she was going into her work building. There are a ton of people protesting downtown. This is why it is hard to reconcile the ideals with the reality. She is the 99% just trying to go to her job. And she works for a lawyer that represents people with disabilities. What the fuck. That really upsets me.

And the pepper has finally been sprayed, as of about 30 minutes ago. I had a feeling this would turn ugly this afternoon. After the protesters weren't allowed to shut down the trains this morning, the afternoon commute was an obvious target. And they've succeeded somewhat, several trains are being re-routed, and delays galore.

The asshole in me wants to go for a walk downtown holding a sign that says, "Banks R Rad."
