Miss Scarlet: Do you miss him?
Mrs. White: Well, it's a matter of life after death. Now that he's dead, I have a life.
Wadsworth: But, he was your second husband. Your first husband also disappeared.
Mrs. White: But that was his job. He was an illusionist.
Wadsworth: But he never reappeared!
Mrs. White: He wasn't a very good illusionist.

one of the greatest monologues on life...
Mitch: Value this time in your life kids, because this is the time in your life when you still have your choices, and it goes by so quickly. When you're a teenager you think you can do anything, and you do. Your twenties are a blur. Your thirties, you raise your family, you make a little money and you think to yourself, "What happened to my twenties?" Your forties, you grow a little pot belly you grow another chin. The music starts to get too loud and one of your old girlfriends from high school becomes a grandmother. Your fifties you have a minor surgery. You'll call it a procedure, but it's a surgery. Your sixties you have a major surgery, the music is still loud but it doesn't matter because you can't hear it anyway. Seventies, you and the wife retire to Fort Lauderdale, you start eating dinner at two, lunch around ten, breakfast the night before. And you spend most of your time wandering around malls looking for the ultimate in soft yogurt and muttering "how come the kids don't call?" By your eighties, you've had a major stroke, and you end up babbling to some Jamaican nurse who your wife can't stand but who you call mama.
Any questions?

We re-watched Anchorman the other night. Still not funny. Not at all, really. I have the same problem with it that I have with most of Apatow's toilet babies: almost all of the humor comes from people saying absurdly crass things as loud as possible and intermittent, spontaneous violence.
Anchorman is one of the worst offenders, though, because it is just stupid. I'm sure it would help if I thought that Will Ferrell was funny (outside of the SNL Blue Oyster Cult sketch with Christopher Walken), but probably not much. He is the prototype of the bumbling man-child that is at the center of every comedy blockbuster of the last ten years. His career trajectory is a blueprint for every comedian who leaves his roots in television and stand up far too soon in favor of same/same/same film roles. I'm watching it happen to Zach Galafianakis right now, who is much funnier and far more deserving than Will Ferrell will ever be. And it sucks.

I laughed once - at the one line I remembered from the film the first time I saw it almost ten years ago. "Milk was a bad choice." And even that almost had the humor entirely stripped away by Ferrell's delivery.

After the Hangover and it's resulting popularity, I was so happy I saw Zach at Sasquatch the month before, because Zach Galifianakis is never going to be Zach Galifianakis. Dood gon' be typecast even more than ol' Michael Cera.
