If you draw a jack on the cut it is two. If you have the jack that is the same suit as the cut card in your hand you get one. This does not apply to the crib.

not sure if apples to apples got mentioned, but yeah that. Though after playing it a lot, you get a bit burnt out on the word selection

Apples to apples is fun in a group for sure. If you find you play it a lot, you might want to buy some of the expansions (they just add more cards, which helps if you're getting tired of the same words all the time).

Very true. I love the game, and when I play we usually make our own cards. Everyone writes a bunch of adjectives on slips of paper as well as a handful of nouns and we just use them instead of cards. Definitely makes for some hilarious times, especially when you play with clever people.

J-Dawg
I'm totally on board with you for games, although I actually really like Settlers and play it online (mostly Cities and Knights though) all the time.

I also play a lot of online dominion lately- which is depressing, because I generally do really well against my friends and usually win, but online I lose the majority of my matches by a longshot.

Have you tried Smallworld? It's an absolutely awesome boardgame that is incredibly easy to teach to noobs- and with the expansions the replayability is awesome.

I have apples to apples parties once in awhile at my house. I've gotten so tired of most board games, but holy shit is that game hilarious to play with a bunch of people.

I've played smallworld numerous times. I enjoy the game, but I'm not terribly good at it. The most recent game i made a single mistake that completely sunk me, although with my gaming group it's pretty common to have a single mistake cost you the game since we're pretty ruthless.

Tonight we played Caylus and I managed my first win of that game ever in my group, although it was very close - a 6 point spread from 1st to third, in a 5-player game.

I've never lost Puerto Rico in my group, and I'm about 50/50 on Power Grid usually (which is another awesome game if you've never played it).

I don't do the online thing, because for me the big appeal of games is the social / face to face aspect.

I do enjoy Dominion from time to time but find it a little too "multi-player-solitaire-ish" to want to play it very often.

Yeah, I only have dominion: Intrigue, which I actually like for multiplayer because it has so many attack cards and thus feels a lot less like solitaire- playing online is crazy though, because you get all the expansions going at once

Power Grid is definitely an awesome game- I've only played it a few times though and never won- my Calgary friends play it way too often. If I'd known you were a gamer I'd have forced you somehow to go to Underground Con a few weeks ago- my friends were organizers and I ran some Dungeons and Dragons at it.

I don't D&D, but I do have an RPG group and we're currently doing a Warhammer: Fantasy Roleplay campaign. I have a soft spot for Call of Cthulhu and Shadowrun, but don't have a group doing either of them at the moment.

I'll try to check out the con next year.

yeah if you want a hookup for Shadowrun PM me- I'm friends with Bruce, who is the shadowrun head honcho for our part of the world.

Why dont' you DnD? I dont' 4th edition, but I used to play a ton of 3.5, in fact, I know so many people because I was the organizer of the Calgary Dungeons and Dragons Meetup Group for a while.

The main reason I don't D&D is that I prefer RPGs that are more story-oriented as opposed to crunchy dice-fests. Shadowrun is one of the exceptions to that rule for me. I really enjoy games where rolling dice happens infrequently and it's more about storytelling / roleplaying. The way my group plays warhammer is kind of a mix and I'm OK with it.

I also enjoy indie / 1 shot things like Sweet Agatha and Dead of Night.

Hmm... I can't imagine Warhammer RPG would be more story oriented than a dice-fest- actually the RP part is why I like DnD so much as a platform- you can go entire sessions without Dr. Garbanzohting, and then rely on a robust rule system when it comes down to things and the rubber hits the road.

At UndergroundCon we did an Iron GM (yes, like iron chef) competition and my players only had 2 Dr. Garbanzohts, but a lot of storyline and social stuff- and that was in a 1 shot- it was a fun little horror campaign- which is my favorite kind to run.
