Greetings and salutations. This will be my first trip to sasquatch. Me and some friends will be traveling from Wisconsin. I was wondering what sort of cell reception you get at the gorge? I'm on the Verizon network, with a Droid incredible. Thanks for your help.

from what I've heard verizon has pretty good reception there. I use at&t myself and it was not that great last year, probably all the frat kids and hipsters with iphones

AT&T was absolute crap last year. I sent a text message at around 8pm one night, and immediately got a message saying it failed. I got a confirmation the text was sent at 4pm the next day. I also received four text messages from the night before informing me of where everyone was meeting that night. Good timing.

yeah text messaging was definitely horrible last year, i'd assume it had to do with every shirtless bro tapping away on his iphone (there were shitloads of them). i think someone posted a while back about emailing at&t to see if they'd bring out some more trucks this year to help with the demand. knowing how that company operates, i'd imagine they got a response that was a polite way of saying "go fuck yourself"

Just as a note to some Canadian travellers (can only speak for Alberta Telus), you should likely just expect to have horrible reception. Also, my first year there I never used my phone due to the next to zero reception but forgot to turn it off and came back to nearly $400 in roaming charges. This is the only place in the states this has happened to me. When you aren't trying to use your phone turn it off.

BC Telus was the same last year. Our phones were useless. Make sure they remain OFF.
Don't count on being able to text msg. If they do work, there is a major delay.
The day after I got home from Sasq last year, I got a FLOOD of text msgs.

I'll probably just go all hippie that weekend and ditch my phone the entire time. there shouldn't be roaming charges for texts, but if you've got anything on your phone that auto-connects (checking the weather, etc) it will definitely ding you for roaming.

I have a non-smart phone with Fido in BC and when I go to Sasquatch I've never been charged those mysterious roaming charges just for having your phone on. You're not the only person who I've heard report them though. Alex is probably right: if you have functions that auto-connect they're probably the reason your bills are inflated. Data has roaming charges, too.
There is definitely an increased rate for texting while there unless you have them built into your phone plan. But in my experience texts do take FOREVER (many hours) to be received. They're useless for meting up with people. My advice is to do things the old fashion way and make plans and actually stick to them, and when necessary bite the bullet and make a couple expensive phone calls. Also, having an end of the night meeting place helps keep phone usage down. Even if that place is just your camp site.

US roaming text messages are 0.60 per sent... Data roaming is anywhere from $8-$52/MB (make sure data is set to off when roaming)... Calling is 0.99/min + 0.75/min if the call is LD... All carriers have packages that you can purchase for the calling, texting or data. Personally I plan to purchase 100 roaming mins for $40 because I definately have some calls to make before I get to the gorge.
I'm with bell but the roaming charges are pretty standard across carriers... the difference in cost for data roaming depends on the existing local data feature you purchase.
As someone who works for a carrier, I urge all Canadians to call your carrier and get informed about the specific rates and packages available...
If you don't plan on using your phone at all, other then for emergencies, I suggest setting your phone to home only.

Does anyone know if Bell works? I am from Vancouver, BC and I need to make 2 calls to the boss on Monday and Tuesday morning and really need to have reception to do that!

I can tell you, you will most likely be using AT&T if you have a newer HSPA phone, and if your phone is more then 6 months old with bell it is CDMA and will be using either verizon or another CDMA carrier... I was on CDMA last year and like I said service was spotty... This year I'll be on at&t so not sure what that's gonna be like...
