 STOP CLAPPING
« Thread Started on Jun 2, 2011, 11:59pm »

I know that I'm usually a proponent of NOT making too many threads, but fuck it, this needs to be said and I didn't know where else to put it.*

Look everyone, I get that you're pumped to be at a music festival. And I get that you do things you normally wouldn't do (I rarely walk around at a concert in a wife beater and sunscreen, high-fiving people who are also singing the same sweet song I am). And I get that clapping any time you can discern the beat, or any time the song gets even kinda quieter, has long seemed part of the festival experience.

But it's gotta stop. It's getting out of hand.

It was getting out of hand when people were clapping semi-rhythmically during Explosions in the Sky. And it reached a peak this year when the kid I was standing near during Iron & Wine (who was there because he was seeing Bright Eyes for the first time ever and he was totally pumped for it) kept trying to get the crowd involved. Sometimes he'd add a flourish and drop some rapid eighth-note claps to spice up the otherwise obviously simple 4/4 beat.

Fortunately, it didn't catch on most of the time because just stop fucking clapping. So here's a public announcement, which I will likely make a sticky next year: MINIMIZE THE CLAPPING. There should be, at most, ONE INSTANCE PER SET of the audience clapping along in unison. Exceeding that, on an individual or collective level, is just annoying. It's like doing the wave at a baseball game when your team is behind -- it shows you don't give a shit about the entertainment, and you're just there to be seen or hang out with your friends at an acceptably cool place.

*Would anyone want a "Festival Pet Peeves" thread? Or would it just be me posting shit that pisses me off for no one's entertainment?

clapping is dumb, I'll proudly admit to being one of the assholes that didn't clap when jeff tweedy told us to

still, clapping at concerts annoys me way less than clapping at the end of a movie does

I saw Fitz and the Tantrums in Boise yesterday at Alive After Five (since I was too drunk to see them at the festival) and while they put on a great show and I want nothing more than to dance horizontally with Noelle Skaggs, they fucking made us clap during every song. I DON'T WANT TO CLAP ANYMORE. STOP MAKING ME.

First of all, its perfect clapping music. Second of all, I saw Noelle after the show at the squatch and told her I loved her, but I called her Nicole, which was embarassing... but I was drunk and got over it and high fived fitz.
