ha ha ha, they have those same dinos at the Calgary zoo! They are set up with motion sensors that roar at you and shake their arms when someone walks by.

I was loaded at this zoo fundraiser when some friends and I snuck into the Dino park and started playing with the dinosaurs. God I love the zoo.

I love the Calgary zoo! My two year nephew always makes him mom call me so he can tease me about how often he gets to go. Brat.

The moving dinosaurs are gone now :'(

They were only on loan from somewhere. It's back to the non-moving dino statues. On the plus side...the penguin exhibit open next year!!!!!!

The Penguins will rule the world in 2012.

The only thing similar between Vancouver and LA is the film industry. By all other counts Vancouver=Seattle, but it's only a couple hours down the road so that's an easy one.

Ruling out Seattle because it is so obvious, I'd say the most similar city to Vancouver would be San Francisco.

Are there, perhaps, more tasteful things to do in this city?

We've got a pretty huge Fringe Theatre Festival in August which gets a lot of International attention. Indy in July, Capital Ex in July, Taste of Edmonton in July, Heritage Festival (basically a giant culture/food festival at one of our amazing river valley parks), Winterlight in January (a huge snow/ice/outdoor festival), Yukigassen! (a 3 day snowball Dr. Garbanzoht tournament at Fort Edmonton Park), Street Performers' Festival in Churchill Square, River City Roundup (starts with a cattle drive through the streets and kicks off the Canadian Finals Rodeo), Sonic Boom Festival (last year Rise Against, Weezer, Bad Religion, etc played).

We've also got the Winspear Centre for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, The Citadel Theatre, The Royal Alberta Museum, The Telus World of Science, Commonwealth Stadium for football, soccer, and concerts, the Jubilee Auditorium for shows, The Garneau and Princess Theatres for independent movies, and I can keep going if you wish.

Point is, we're not all strip clubs and truck nuts.

*EDIT* oh, and the mall. Can't come to Edmonton and not go to West Edmonton Mall (apparently). I hate it, but it's always packed.

Something tells me it's all happening at the zoo.

I love San Francisco, but honestly I don't think it's very much like Vancouver. I always feel like SF is more of an east coast city that has been transplanted and assimilated by the west coast. The whole "cityX=cityY" comparison is pretty fucking arbitrary, though, so I think we can both be right.

I've taken a couple weekend trips there during the summer, so my analysis isn't backed by any substantial experience. I just got a laid back vibe from the city that reminded me of home. Completely agree though that comparing two cities is a very subjective thing.

Somehow I haven't spent any good time in Portland yet (trying to change this this summer,) but if Portlandia is at all accurate then Vancouver=Portland is another definite possibility. So... basically the entire west coast from SF up is exactly the same.

I don't think Portland is like SF at all. I have only been there once so I could be way off, but they seem fairly different.

San Francisco is absolutely nothing like Portland.
