Calgary is very rad! I've been here all my life...other than a brief stint in Lethbridge and Regina anyways. There's nowhere else I'd rather live. |

Agreed, I love it in Calgary. Such a great city. I moved from the east coast about four years ago and I can't imagine ever going back.
And yes, Edmonton is a dirty hole.

It was fine I suppose. The winter was unbearable. -35 degrees, snowy and windy for about 7 fucking months straight. Nice parks in the summer though.
Edmonton's not so bad. I've been there numerous times and I think it's a fairly nice city. Just looks shitty coming in from Calgary because you have to go through the industrial park. But once you get into the city center a bit it's quite nice.

Calgary is a big oil and gas executive city. Streets are generally really clean and well maintained. Calgary is very much the conservative (republican) epicenter of Canada. There's a week long event here called the Calgary Stampede which is a big rodeo and carnival with a lot of events and attractions surrounding it. It's one of the more expensive cities to live in Canada. And area-wise, it's fucking huge.
Edmonton....
These are just my opinions. I despise most things about Edmonton and Edmontonians are more than welcome to talk shit about Calgary.

Great AMAZING hiking but the city of Banff is a tourist trap! AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS! Go to Waterton instead.

I'm not going to talk shit about Calgary except to say that without the Olympics, Calgary would have been Edmonton's identical twin.
I agree that the stretch of Gateway Blvd from the city limit to Whyte Ave is horrendous, but to judge a city based on 1 road which ends up turning pretty fucking nice makes me think a lot less of your arguments.
for the rest of this thread I think I'll reply to shit-talk about Edmonton with only pictures.

go to Jasper. Almost no chain stores, more actual nature and small town feel.

Fuck! Us Albertans are definitely showing our pride today!
Whyte Ave. is pretty awesome, and like Regina, Edmonton has some nice lush parks and rivers.
edit - AGREED, JASPER IS NICE! WATERTON IS NICER THOUGH.

Most of my bias towards Edmonton has to do with driving in it. The constant construction everywhere, the fact that your Mayor doesn't know what a snowplow is, circle intersections, the street numbering is backwards, and the numerous roads that all of a sudden decide to change names when you haven't turned off it.
