Hahahaha. In my opinion they were terrible and they made me so mad I left. But Lumpy is a huge fan and he loved it. This is a source of great contention.

And they were fucking abysmal at Sasquatch. Ever see that Youtube video of that very old man who freaks the fuck out on some young whipper-snapper for skateboarding or something and then at the end he blows an air horn and screams "IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!!"? It was almost exactly like that but way less funny. I've never seen anyone suck the joy out of the Gorge so quickly.

I've heard from so many people that it was really, really bad. The people I talked to were Pavement fans, so I tend to believe them but I'd be interested to hear from this Lumpy character. So many factors can change your opinion on a show, and with Pavement part of their appeal is how unpolished they sound so I could see how some people might overlook certain sound issues and still think the show was good. I think when I saw them that I was on such a high from never seeing them before (and never really thinking it would happen) that they probably could have stood there for 45 mins and I would have still thought it was a great show. However, I tried REALLY hard to take my fangirl cap off for the show I saw them at and really look at it objectively.

In addition, to HG's point, Stephen Malkmus can come across like a huge dick in most situations so I can see how he would "suck the joy" out of the Gorge. I heard he said he was embarrassed of how that show went, too.

Yeah, well, this is basically what happened. Not even joking. We watched them for nearly 40 minutes, and between Malkmus' day-drunk and the massive bitchfit he was throwing, they managed to play all of two songs in that time. Literally.

The whole 'They're unpolished, that's part of their charm!' argument is totally bogus. What they were was just straight unprofessional.
