Quickest Drive from Portland to Gorge?

First time going to the Gorge, and I was wondering the quickest drive to get there from Portland. The festival website says to go I-84 east to Highway 97 north but that seems like that is if you want to stay on the highways. What about taking I-5 north to US 12 across? I realize that is going through some mountains but it seems to be more direct. Anyone have ideas on this? Also, the website says it takes 5 hours, is that an accurate number?

I think we did the 84/97 drive in about 4-4.5 hours last year. Yes, it really is that long. I think taking 12 would add quite a bit more time to that as you'll have to pass through some small towns/windy mountain roads. Google maps says that route takes a little over 5 hours vs. 4.5 along 84.

Thank you Oregonienne. Been waiting for an answer to that for a while. 4 to 4.5 hours is not too long anyways. 8 days and counting.

Same here- 84 to 97 route. Seems like it takes forever. 4-4.5 is correct. Seattle people have it so easy.
