 Tips on Flying to Sasquatch?
« Thread Started on Apr 18, 2011, 2:47pm »

Hey ya'll, I need your sage advice! (Also, if this has already been addressed somewhere else please point me to it, I looked around a bit and couldn't find what I wanted.)

My best friend and I are flying into Seattle from two separate places and renting a car when we get there on Thursday around 2pm.

For those of you who have flown in before, can you give me advice on traveling with camping supplies? I've done the festival scene before but only driving in, so I know my supplies are going to be seriously limited this time around.

We obviously can't fly with a cooler, any liquids, etc...What's the best way to make Sasquatch just as enjoyable as my other festival experiences? How should I pack my tent?

If it helps any, we are both flying via Southwest and can have two checked bags up to 50 pounds and the standard carry-on stuff

We are planning on getting food, booze, etc. once we are en route in our rental car.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate any advice!

Hey bird--

a tent shouldn't be too difficult to pack. Most tents are pretty compact. What other supplies were you planning on bringing? You're going to have to be very wise with what you pack, but you'll more than likely have to bring two bags.

And as an eastern coaster with limited space in her luggage also, I would say hit up wally world or target and keep your receipts for when the weekend is over ;)

if I was flying to a festival, I'd do it like this.

Suitcase #1:
-tent
-compact pillow
-air mattress
-assorted other camping accessories (flashlight, shoes, whatever)

Suitcase #2:
-clothes and personal stuff

Carry-on:
-only the absolute essentials (tickets, sunglasses, sunscreen, 1 change of clothes, jacket, etc)

On the way, stop at a walmart or whatever and pick up a throwaway styrofoam cooler (sorry environment) or a collapsible one, your drink/food of choice, ice, etc. and anything you weren't able to fit in your luggage. Also, party gear.

When you're on your way home you can pack any merch you buy into your carry-on, and just pack it exactly the same (plus 1 collapsible cooler if you can fit it).

When we went to Pemberton I was able to manage on 1 backpack + a tent for 3 days, but it wasn't the most comfortable experience of my life. I think I took 2 shirts, a pair of shorts, jeans, and a hoodie, and just bought anything else I needed from the overpriced store in the campground.

I did some research last year, and there's places to rent tents between Seattle and the Gorge that are much cheaper than trying to check a tent both ways on a flight, so I recommend that. However, I haven't tried this since I hitched a ride with someone who had an RV the first year and gave rides to people from the west coast who had room in their tents.
