Wait, wasn't there a person named broccoli rob at some point, or am I just supposed to be staying in my corner for the night? (The Intoxication Thread)

Do you plan on going straight to the Gorge from LA?

Hahahahahahahhahaha
Scenery-wise: CA-1 as far as you can.
Effective: I-5.
You literally cannot have both.

Northern CA-1 and the Oregon coast are really pretty too. When we did Coachella '07 we did I-5 down and coast back. It was great.

Even better mixture of both. Do 1 on the way up and the other on the way down.

Based on the research I did for when I was going to do this drive from LA to sasquatch last year, Do CA-1 until about around San Francisco then do 5 the rest of the way. |

Yes, definitely take 1 into San Francisco, then cross the city, take the Bay Bridge, hang out on 80 for a while, and finally emerge on I-5. This will only take two hours.

Not sure what your options are so it is hard to say. If you take I-5 up to the Portland area and then go down 84 through the Columbia River gorge and then up through Washington it is nice. We go that way from Portland.

I have never driven it, but I imagine it would be more scenic than the I-5, which I have taken. It's also a more direct route, however likely slower.
If you do drive it, let me know how it goes!!!

I did a road trip last september from Vancouver, BC to San Diego, CA, and drove US-101 and CA-1 the entire way. It was one of the most spectacular drives I've ever done, but it is a lot slower than I-5. Bear in mind that I was in no hurry at all, but it took me 2 weeks to drive from Vancouver to San Diego. By contrast, I got home in 4 days (and those weren't long days either) by taking the freeways.
If you have the extra time definitely take CA-1 and US-101 if you can. But you will need a lot of extra time (as in days, not hours) to take it the whole way. Otherwise I would I-5 it most of the way (make sure it's your turn to nap through CA's central valley though).

Ya, I should add an adendum to my contribution. We drove staright from Vancouver to Coachella in just under 24 hours. We took 6 days to get home on the coastal highways, driving anywhere from 6-8 hours per day.
