I am no raver...not by a long shot and I would not buy any recorded music by Skrillex, but seeing the show...that is totally different and the set at Coachella was actually awesome. Maybe not something I would want to see over and over for sure, but once or twice in my life...well I am glad I have the chance:-)
Thanks for the welcome Horned Gramma!

Did anyone catch the Gogol Bordello set at Coachella? I am buying a ticket to the DMB festival at the Gorge and Gogol Bordello is on the line-up so I was curious as to what the overall set was like. I watched this video and it looks pretty awesome actually.

Their set at Sasquatch was pretty fucking awesome. I'm not one to dance, usually, but that shit made me hop up off my lazy hill sitting ass and run down to the pit to get my trepak on.

Sweet. I'm pretty excited for the DMB festival actually, even though they haven't released the whole line-up. The Roots, Gogol Bordello, Blind Pilot, Moondoggies. Hell, even HG's favorite band is there, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Plus a DMB set every night, Dave and Tim Reynolds acoustic sets, and much more. I'm buying my ticket Monday. I hope they add a couple more bands that I really like and I will be one happy camper on Labor Dave Weekend.

Yeah it takes an artistic ear and talent to produce music, but when we go to shows we're not paying for a producer, we pay for performers, with that being said, I want a fucking performance.
Deadmau5 and Daft give you an indelible performance this much can't really be argued, there are a lot of elements that go into their shows and as such I can, without hesitation, consider them artists, despite standing around, pressing buttons, and shaking your arms ocassionally.
Bassnectar is hit and miss for me, it's a show, but not always a good one. Dj'n is more than pre-made samples, it's for this reason I still get blown away by Greg Gillis, (Girl Talk,) because though his shows will often imitate the CD he's definitely adlibbing a bunch too.
I've seen Skillex and other commercially acclaimed EDM artists and they are great one time shows, but after I've seen them I've never had a desire to pay strictly for them. |
|
This I would agree with. I actually was agreeing with you the first time too. I still wanna dance my shut off either way though. |
|
I felt like you were, just like Shaxspear for some reason I had gotten into too many Skrillex EDM artists, type conversations lately. It's been quite amusing, especially since one of them was with my boss.
The man is like 60 some years odd and has been working on NPR and Jazz radio for the better part of 45 years. It was odd fodder for conversation to say the least.

Hey haven't had time to post since coming back from coachella.
A couple of bands that were not mentioned that really killed it were Elbow and Sleigh Bells.
When Elbow took the stage and started with birds, by the second verse, i was like, they are nothing special but by the end of the song i was blown away, they only played 7 songs in their 50 minute set but each song was epic.
With lippy kids being the highlight. Such a beautiful song.
I just cannot believe there not bigger in north america, they sould be on the main stage.
Geno, gorgol bordello killed it as well, it was the middle of the after noon 95 degrees with the sun just blistering but everybody was dancing, they have so much energy.

How was Sleigh Bells? It looks like I will end up seeing them since there likely wont be anything else going on that interests me too much when they are on.

Everyone says they are either awful or amazing. Some people say the same thing about Animal Collective. Often the same people, come to think of it. I wouldn't miss their Sasquatch set for anything, Treats is one of the best records of the last several years.

I only caught a couple of their songs near the end. Sounded decent with a lot of energy. I've heard mixed reviews. Ill definitely check them out barring any conflicts.

I think your memory is a bit skewed because Peatrick didn't like either at Coachella. Myself and andimac both thought Sleigh Bells were bad, and we are both Animal Collective fans. Live, the chick sings part of the vocals, and the dude plays guitar part of the time. Everything else is done pushing the play button. It's similar to seeing Girl Talk, only a lot sloppier. Part of me enjoyed seeing them live because I love their album so much, and hearing their songs played so loud was pretty cool, but they didn't enhance the songs by playing/singing along. I'm sure they have good nights and bad nights, but they still aren't playing their songs. I actively avoided them at Coachella, and have very little interest in seeing them at Sasquatch.
However, I agree with funnygrrl about Elbow, they were fantastic. I think we are the only fans on the board. No one seems to care, or care that they should care.

I LOVED Treats when it came out. Seeing them at Coachella last year was super lame. They were slightly better this year, but the whole idea of a lot of canned music live kills me inside.
