I don't think I can do this, so I think after enough people post, I'll just do a top 40 songs from people's top 40 songs list.

Haha, I was already compiling songs from others lists. I just recently killed a hard drive and lost everything. So I can't just look through my ichunes and pick.

I feel like the only intellectually honest way to do this is to make a list of the first forty songs that pop into my head that I would designate as 'favorites'. It may not be entirely accurate, but it'll come from a real place, and anyway at least half that many songs I have thought of as my 'all-time' favorite at one point or another in my life. Anyway, here goes.
1. Sting - 'We Work the Black Seam Together' 2. Del Shannon - 'Runaway' 3. The Philistines Jr. - 'The Bus Stop Song' 4. Pink Floyd - 'Brain Damage/Eclipse' 5. Animal Collective - 'Winter's Love' 6. The Residents - 'The Shoe Salesman' 7. Aimee Mann - 'Wise Up' 8. Barenaked Ladies - 'What a Good Boy' 9. Brian Eno - 'Golden Hours' 10. They Might Be Giants - 'Spiraling Shape' 11. The Beatles - 'Fool on the Hill' 12. Frank Zappa - 'Uncle Remus' 13. The Residents - 'Ship of Fools' 14. The Decemberists - 'Red Right Ankle' 15. Chumbawamba - 'Celebration, FL' 16. Clem Snide - 'The Sound of German Hip-Hop' 17. cLOUDDEAD - 'The Velvet Ant' 18. Dan Deacon - 'Snookered' 19. Dead Can Dance - 'The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove' 20. The Gerbils - 'Lucky Girl' 21. Harry Connick, Jr. - 'Booker' 22. Neutral Milk Hotel - 'Ghost' 23. King Crimson - 'Matte Kudasai' 24. LCD Soundsystem - 'Dance Yrself Clean' 25. eels - 'Climbing to the Moon' 26. Midlake - 'Kingfish Pies' 27. The Monkees - 'Papa Gene's Blues' 28. Polaris - 'Hey Sandy' 29. Nice - 'Christiana Amore' 30. Elvis Perkins - 'While You Were Sleeping' 31. Optiganally Yours - 'Geppetto' 32. Paul Simon - 'Think Too Much (b)' 33. R.E.M. - 'Nightswimming' 34. Simon & Garfunkel - 'The Boxer' 35. Tom Waits - 'Soldier's Things' 36. Why? - 'These Few Presidents' 37. Ween - 'Sorry Charlie' 38. The Residents - 'Two Lips/Mr. Bee's Bumble' 39. Talking Heads - 'Don't Worry About the Government' 40. Silver Jews - 'Tennessee'
Even as I finish typing that, I realize that I could do the same exercise again and come up with a list that is entirely different, but all of the really important ones are there. I have no doubt.
I propose posting links to Grooveshark playlists for anyone who's interested. I'll have to cobble one together... if not tomorrow afternoon then Thursday. Fuckin' finals week goin' on. But it'd be neat to be able to peruse a really concentrated list of the songs that are most important to us.

If only I knew. I covered this with one of my bands a few years ago. I could've dedicated it to you. Then everyone would wonder what the fuck what I was talking about when I dedicated a song to "Horned Gramma," but then it'd be okay because I'd seem all cryptic and cool.

My list.. I know there are a couple cover songs, but sometimes you can't help but like the cover more than the original.
1 Foo Dr. Garbanzohters - Everlong (Acoustic) 2 Foo Dr. Garbanzohters - Monkey Wrench 3 Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows 4 Nirvana - Smells like Teen Spirit 5 Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box 6 Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me 7 Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike 8 Soundgarden - Like Suicide 9 Nine Inch Nails - Only 10 Nine Inch Nails - Closer 11 Tool - Aenima 12 Tool - Hooker with a Penis 13 Tool - Vicarious 14 Tool - The Pot 15 Tool - Lateralus 16 Tool - Opiate 17 Tool - Schism 18 A Perfect Circle - Judith 19 Rage Against the Machine - Killing In The Name Of 20 Death Cab for Cutie - I Will Follow You Into The Dark 21 Stars - Take Me to the Riot 22 Green Day - Longview 23 MGMT - Kids 24 Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Stripes - Home 25 Tegan & Sarah - Dancing in the Dark (Cover) 26 Young the Giant - My Body 27 Tenacious D - Fuck Her Gently 28 White Stripes - 7 Nation Army 29 Goodie Mob - Thought Process 30 Outkast - Rosa Parks 31 Hugo - 99 Problems (Cover) 32 Current Swell - Brad's Song 33 The Dudes - Do the Right Thing 34 Xavier Rudd - Home 35 Mumford & Sons - The Cave 36 Gogol Bordello - Alcohol 37 Matthew Good - Giant 38 Blind Melon - No Rain 39 Pearl Jam - Better Man 40 Pixies - Where is My Mind?
Also, I'd like to add Dan Mangan - Rows of Houses and The Naked and Famous - Punching In A Dream as honourable mentions. I didn't feel I could add them since they haven't had to stand the test of time yet, but I think they probably will.
And yes, there is at least one song on my list that I would be a little embarassed of.. but I'm assuming this is a "safe place" lol

I got to 19 songs last night when Microsoft Word crashed and I nearly flung my laptop on the ground. I was super stoked I remembered to add The Four Seasons' "December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night)" to the list, though.

Also, HG, I really thought James' "Sit Down" would have been in your list somewhere.

Much like everyone else, this would be totally different if I did it again later. I seem to have stuck to songs that have been around forever and had a lasting impact on my life rather than more current ones. First 10 in order, the rest alphabetical by artist.
1. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd 2. I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles 3. Dark Center Of The Universe - Modest Mouse 4. Heroin - Velvet Underground 5. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-IX) - Pink Floyd (I dont care if picking a 9 part song is cheating) 6. You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones 7. Visions Of Johanna - Bob Dylan 8. All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem 9. Epiphany - Bad Religion 10. Heroes - David Bowie
Haiti - Arcade Fire It's Only Me (The Wizard Of Magicland) - Barenaked Ladies A Day In The Life - The Beatles And Your Bird Can Sing - The Beatles Piano Man - Billy Joel Tyrants - Black Mountain Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again - Bob Dylan Touch Me - The Doors First Breath After a Coma - Explosions in the Sky Waitin' for Superman - Flaming Lips Everlong - Foo Dr. Garbanzohters My Name is a Killing Word - Form of Rocket Empire Ants - Gorillaz I Wanna Be Your Dog - Iggy Pop and the Stooges I Came As A Rat (Long Walk Off A Short Dock) - Modest Mouse Whenever You Breathe Out, I Breathe In (Positive Negative) - Modest Mouse Polar Opposites - Modest Mouse Married With Children - Oasis Sheep - Pink Floyd Fearless - Pink Floyd Common People - Pulp Somebody to Love - Queen Optimistic - Radiohead Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones Gimmie Shelter - Rolling Stones 54-46 That's My Number/Ball And Chain - Sublime Lateralis - Tool Rockin' in the Free World - Neil Young Oh! Sweet Nuthin' - Velvet Underground Surf Wax America - Weezer
