I'd never say my taste is better or more valid than anyone here, but I can confidently say I am much better informed.

And that 'We Were Dead' is a steaming pile of horse shit, and that Modest Mouse in performance is the portrait of a band selling out as far as possible.

I don't mind Modest Mouse's last two albums. Only "King Rat," stands out on their recent EP, but We Were Dead had a couple of my favorite Modest Mouse chunes. I don't listen to either album anymore, so neither is essential, but saying those are terrible is comparing them to their earlier stuff.
They are still unique compared to what else is out there. The fact they aren't as good as they were ten years ago doesn't make them bad. Sure their sound has become more pop, and many call them the definition of a sell out, but if We Were Dead was everyone's introduction to Modest Mouse, we would be talking about how good it is, because of the uniqueness of their sound.
