Well shit, the Boys Noize show in Seattle that was supposed to happen on the 11th got cancelled. Wonder what that was about.

EDIT: That seems to be the only date cancelled from his current tour. May seems way too far out for any kind of Santa Clause to affect a December show, but I think it might shed a little more light on the rumors of him being at Sasquatch. Doesn't AZ book shows for the Nepchune anyway? That would make sense...

I'm torn on the Neurosis show because of reasons
a. I've been waiting for my birthday to be on a Saturday for 5 years; I may throw a party. On the other hand, what better way is there to celebrate than at a sick metal show?
b. The last time I saw Neurosis was traumatic. I didn't let chemotherapy stop me from seeing any shows last year (except Shellac, but there's another shitty story for that), but Neurosis sure-as-fucking-heavy-metal pushed me to my breaking point at MFNW. I had just watched Grails and two Explosions in the Sky sets, not to mention the loudest, most intense fucking band in the world: the Antlers, when out of negative time and space a massive stampede of pure, dark black evil erupted directly beneath me from the gates of hell, destined to fuck my picc line shit up. Fucking metal. I should probably just nut up (GET IT) and give 'em another shot.
c. I just threw down mad stacks of cheese yesterday on tickets for John Cale, Pinback, Tomahawk, and Ben Folds Five.
d. Oh shit, I forgot about Sasquatch.

Ben Folds 5 solt out, pooter. Very sad panda! I planned on going to the box office yesterday but my goddamn final exam tragedy screwed that up and when I went today I got the bad news that it sold out yesterday. SCHOOL IS RUINING MY LIFE. The silver lining is that you've got extra cheese if you want to do the Neurosis thing.

It looks like Residents tickets are on sale at the Nepchune box office (no online purchase option as of now) for $29 a piece (including $2 fee), so I'm probably going to buy that first. I could pick up a few extras if dudes and Grammas wanna hook up da gouda.

So stroked.

Uhh, yeah dude.

Bring your iPod over and I'll dump more Residents shit on there than you can possibly handle.

I know which ones you've heard and I can safely say that the material you are familiar with will probably make up roughly 0.001% of the setlist. They like to dig REAL deep when they put a show together. They don't play to tourists; if anything, they get off on confounding them. They play to people like me. So start doing your homework ASAP.

Although this is the first synopsis of what they're serving up on the Wonder of Weird tour that I've seen, they have been laying the groundwork for these themes for the last twelve months. There has been a phony (or is it?) 'falling out' between the Singing Resident ("Randy Rose") and the Sound Architect ("Charles 'Chuck' Bobuck") that has seen Randy move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in pornography, while Chuck has been living the simple life on a farm with his husband Roman where he has been encouraging his young neighbor, Noman, to pursue a career in music by allowing him to rehearse in their barn.

Randy's story has been being chronicled on a blog he keeps, which is ostensibly dedicated to his cat Maurice; Chuck has been keeping the few and the proud updated via a personal Facebook account (where I have argued with him over philosophical ideals, prejudices and phrasing). It's all part of the act; those parts which are true and those which aren't are completely indiscernible from one another, but it doesn't matter. They are hiding Easter eggs all over creation that won't explode and cover you in grime until they are standing directly in front of you to watch and laugh as it happens.

Everyone comes to the Freak Show, the Residents lamented on their classic album/CD-Rom/stage play Freak Show (1996), implicating the looky-lous who buy tickets just to see the Eyeballs (this being the primary reason the Eyeballs were eventually retired); if you want to be the recipient of even half of what the upcoming tour has to offer, you've got forty years worth of history lessons to catch up on between now and February.

So get crackin'.

The joy of being a Residents fan, to me, is the inexhaustible patience required. The minor themes -- musical, lyrical, philosophical -- which are established in 1976 that don't mean anything to anyone until they are re-appropriated in 2007; the way the punchline to a joke isn't delivered until the joke itself is almost entirely forgotten. Or the way they lead you way off in crazy directions promising resolution which may come, but often never does.

Acutely self-aware and immensely self-conscious, the Residents take revisionism beyond the pale that George Lucas filled with his stinking piss the moment that Greedo shot first and bring it around back and full-circle to include (and make necessary) revision not only of their work but of their own personal histories. They regard their body of work as a prodigal son who gets what he deserves instead of what he wants; they become infuriated with themselves and the lives their lives have lived behind their backs. And so, when they take the stage, they have the demeanor of the forgotten Muppet, Don Music:

We have the material. We have the passion. We hate it all, but we are going to play it anyhow. With our foreheads.
