Their drummer was also seriously impressive. HG summed it up really well, I was quite impressed and would definitely recommend seeing them live if you have the chance. But make sure you can see the stage because watching them work all of those pedals and watching that guy use his guitar in a way that I have never seen anyone else do is where it's at.

Donald Glover got sold out in seattle so fuck it I bought a ticket to the 21+ show at the aladdin theater in portland. Anyone think I got a chance of gettin in? I have to see him or I'm gonna be super sad :(

I love donald glover but uh...his rap really doesn't do a whole lot for me...

I dunno what to say about getting in, it's not going to be that easy. Your best best might be emailing or tweeting donald closer to the show and see if he'll sneak you in. I've got friends that have done that before and had it work

so The Residents are doing a cross-Canada tour. I just read this article (http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Artists/R/Residents/2011/03/17/17653191.html) and I'm intrigued. Not sure if I'm prepared to delve into 40 years worth of material though...

My god, don't try to do that blindly. They have made A LOT of records in the last 40 years. They have over 60 albums. I live with one of their largest fans and I have not heard half of the stuff they have released. I bet HG can chime in with suggestions. Duckstab is probably a good start, that is one of the more "accessible" albums.

I just read his latest review in the Record A Day thread, and I think it's probably best that I don't attempt it. I'm not ready for it.

Duckstab was really popular when it came out, even had some radio hits. That is why I suggest it for the uninitiated. HG is a tried and true fan, he is obsessed and that is difficult because of the fact that they are always putting something new out. But there are a few that I think are really great and don't require all of the homework. Demons Dance Alone is really wonderful. It is very intense and emotional, but that is why it is so great. That one is especially poignant for me for some similar reasons, HG and I both spent the beginning of our adulthood dealing with the fallout of 9/11 and it took years and years to even realize that. DDA really helps put those feelings of loss and sadness and confusion into a more tangible package. It is a very cathartic experience. Ulitmately, though, the Residents are performance artists. Listening to that album vs seeing footage form the performance really makes so much of a difference. So even if someone did not want to check out all of their stuff or just felt really overwhelmed by it, I would still recommend checking out a show if you can because that is where the story is. They are wonderful storytellers.

that...was slightly terrifying. You know when you're watching a show like Criminal Minds or CSI and there's a really really creepy scene with some middle-aged man-child serial killer playing with decapitated dolls or something equally unsettling? I now know where the music for those scenes comes from.

I don't know that I'll ever be able to hear a nursery rhyme and not think of The Residents.

I think the best compliment that I can pay to this record is that it's ambitiously unsettling, and I'm pretty sure that's exactly what they were going for. HG, when you read this, I want you to know that I have no idea what this album is supposed to mean, or if I'll ever understand what the hell I just listened to, but I have gained a strange respect for you as a result. It's not my type of thing, but the fact that you're so completely obsessed with this band is intriguing to me.

I plan on listening to Demons Dance Alone at some point in the near future.

Haha, yes. Well that is one of the reasons I didn't want you to just pick at random. There is some stuff that if I heard it as my first listen, I would never listen to them again. But kudos for trying something new. 8-)

Definitely do listen to Demons Dance Alone. If nothing else, the contrast to Duck Stab will completely blow your mind.
