The Dudes Christmas show is happening again at Republik, December 22nd. Last year was a great time, I'll definitely be back.

Also, do any of you Edmonton folk know if Freezing Man is going to be back? A group of us came up last year and had an amazing time, but I haven't heard anything about them putting it on again.

Haven't heard anything yet, but I'll let you know if/when I do.

Farewell to Freezing Man

December 9, 2011. 10:33 am • Section: Plugged In

Edmonton’s Freezing Man Festival is melting into a puddle of nothingness. Organizers are pulling the plug on the music and winter celebration because of poor ticket sales.

Less than 3,000 tickets were sold to last January’s inaugural party, which featured performers such as Major Lazer, Broken Social Scene and Chromeo, and carnival rides at the Edmonton Expo Centre. The venue can hold 8,000 people.

“First-year attendance simply wasn’t strong enough for us to do it again at the same level,” says Martin Salloum, president and CEO of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, and one of the producers of Freezing Man. “For us to downgrade it (in 2012) just wouldn’t do it justice.”

The festival was the brainchild of Jefferson Starship manager Michael Gaiman, who wanted to encourage fans around the world to visit our winter city. (He’s based in Los Angeles, Calif.) Unfortunately, Salloum admits the event failed to land at least one big musical act that would encourage fans to make the trip to Edmonton. “We had a lot of medium names,” he says.

Organizers were plagued with other problems, too. The carnival rides were supposed to be outdoors, but were moved inside because the weather was too cold, and one of the headliners, DJ Kaskade, got sick and was forced to cancel his set on the day of the show.

no problem. I've voiced my concerns with the journalist covering the story. We have so many standalone winter events around here, yet nobody ever thinks to combine one or two. Instead, they just keep putting together single events that don't really draw anybody from out of town and are barely even covered by the local media.

We have a snowball Dr. Garbanzoht tournament, which was apparently the first of its kind in Canada (huge in Japan) which would have been the perfect complement to Freezing Man...but they were held a month apart and in different areas of the city. You'd think that the event organizers would do a little research before putting up a pile of money for an event.

So frustrating.

They only sold 3000 tickets to a concert with Major Lazer, Chromeo and BSS? Do people in Edmonton not like music?

In other news, I totally spaced about buying Steel Panther tickets and it sold out. Laaammmeee.

To be fair BSS was here like 4x last year. That said, I don't blame the ticket-buying public as much as I blame the event organizers (if you can call them that)

Holy Balls...I wish I could have cloned myself to sell out that show...
1. I could be boogiing in multiple places at once (yes, I pluralized boogie - like skiing).

2. I could get even drunker.

3. I singlehandedly could sell out a show and enjoy Chromeo in unprecedented Clonovision.

Hell yes!

ATTN PORTLAND.

Scalpers over bought for the Portugal. The Man show at the Crystal Ballroom tonight. There are about 500 tickets available on craigslist for this "sold out" show. People will be lucky to get $10 for their tickets. Ripping off scalpers is tons of fun.
