Unfortunately we were pretty much stuck in line for their set but we could see and hear so it still counts! ;)

Forgot to mention that the Lips performance at Rifflandia was X10000000000 times better than Sasquatch. Wayne kept his mouth shut for the most part and they just rocked out and shot lasers/confetti everywhere.

Counts in my book!

Decibel Festival Day 1:
We ended up going to the Warp Showcase @ The Crocodile and saw Machinedrum and Jimmy Edgar. Machinedrum was a hell of a lot of fun. Super good grooves both fast and slow. Got pretty deep and heavy at times. Jimmy Edgar had his "Magenta Live" set going and it was bright as fuck. Kinda bright like Holy Other was but a little more bearable. The sounds he was pumping out were sick though. At one point his was using Portishead's Machine Gun track in a wicked way. Good first night :)

The music itself was comme ci, comme ça as far as I can recall, but the spectacle was faaaaantastic.

Decibel Festival Night 2:
Went to The Paramount tonight and saw Paul Chambers and Orbital. Paul Chambers is someone I haven't heard before (like most of the people playing this fest) but he hails from Belgium. He was pretty cool but I was not ready to let it loose. It was so so. Orbital was fucking magic. I have never listened to any of their albums and was stoked on their set purely based on the stuff I have read about them. Pioneers of a genre that has completely exploded (so I have read) and they don't make it to North America much I gather. I danced for the entire fucking show and screamed until they came back out for an encore. The crowd was fantastic even though it wasn't a full house. Best show so far and it will be hard to beat.

Decibel Festival Nights 3 and 4:
So on Friday we went and saw The Cannabinoids feat. Erykah Badu. It was a pretty sick performance. Taking directly from her little bio on the DB page "Consisting of 9 laptops, 3 turntables, 6 keyboards, 4 drum machines, a Theremin, live projections and over a dozen performers". I was completely depleted of energy and went home right after their set.

Last night was so good and so drunk. Bonobo was so silky smooth. DJ Shadow played a set of tracks not from his recordings. He just basically played a party for us and it was so much fun. The entire Showbox SODO was dancing for both sets. I have been really happy with the crowds at every showcase that I have attended. Good vibes and good times.

Decibel Festival Night 5
This festival is a beast to handle if you are working. I had work in some form or another Wed-Sat and monday. By last night I was on fumes and the only reason that I went out is because I really wanted to see John Talabot. I am glad that I did because he was great. He and Pional were both on stage and Neumos was almost (if not) at capacity. They both were doing live drumming and it was a steamy dance party with weird artwork on the floor that looked like a massive pyramid crystal. It was rad.

If I go back to this next year with the pass I will be taking work off as well. Fun times though. WOOT!

Frightened Rabbit were so good last night. I've been wanting to see them for like 4 years now so it was great to finally see them. Their live show is surprisingly muscular, the lead singers vocals get pushed into the background a bit and instead they get by on sheer force. It will be interesting to see what happens now that they're signed to a major label. They're sound is pretty close to radio friendly but just a bit too depressing, I'm curious to see if they'll smooth their edges a bit or just say fuck it any continue to write depressing shit.

Have you heard either of their two recent EPs? I think it's pretty safe to say that Scott & Co still have much more sadness and heartbreak to offer.

Also, I'm glad you had a great time - those guys really do turn it up to 11 in front of an audience.

Sadly no. I was really hoping they'd play "Confetti" but we didn't get that cover either

I haven't listened to the EP they put out last year but the State Hospital EP is really great. The song State Hospital might have been the most aggressive thing they played last night too. I don't really have a problem with them going pop a bit, songs like "Swim until you can't see land", "Nothing like you", and "Living in Colour" are all really great, I just hope they don't go too far over the edge. The EP is a good reassurance but it could also just be a pallete cleanser before the new album.
