| | But Have You Seen This Band Live Before? « Thread Started on Jun 28, 2010, 9:48pm » | |
Rules are simple. You are the only person on the board who has seen a specific set of six bands/acts live. Each of the six bands/acts have to be well known, so naming your friend's band is not allowed. If another boarder has seen all six on your list, you lose, so try to make it as diverse as possible. You also lose if you name a band too obscure for most of us to know.
This thread should work better on a web board that is practically dead, so the six of us regulars can compare/contrast how many bands we have seen live based on the other's lists.
I doubt anyone will name a band/act no one has seen live, but if no one has seen more than three on your list, you're probably doing pretty good.
So I'll start.
1. MC Hammer 2. Harry Connick Jr. 3. No Doubt 4. Prince 5. Phish 6. White Zombie

Pretty obscure list. I maybe should have specified that it should be a band that can sell out a 1000 person venue. We'll find out in December if this list holds up. I'm only the judge, not the jury.
And no, I've never seen any of these bands live, and had to google Bacon Brothers to make sure you were talking about Kevin.

The Bacon Brothers may be a stretch... I don't think they would sell out a theater with a 1000+ people, but they did play at a film festival that did exactly that... The rest, definitely 1000+

Oh, and I saw Randy Newman and Poe w/Mark Z. Danielewski, so any one of those can pinch hit if there are actually any other BTE fans from back in the day.

Well thanks to extended family for the Paul Simon tickets... Not the best date, not the worst. Aimee Mann was fun; and Yeah I would be one of those BTE throwback fans.

You were between the ages of seven and twelve when Better Than Ezra was a touring band, dontoro.
You should hide your age in your profile if you're going to make claims like that. It's no fun if you cheat.

Who's cheating? I would understand questioning Oingo Boingo, (which is pretty cool btw,) but I'm sorry if in your adolescence you never got a chance to see shows. One of the benefits of having an older sibling, and living in one of the world's major metropolises.
Actually started my music adventure with Tonic and the Goo Goo Dolls, back in 97', then there was Pearl Jam, Gin Blossoms and Better than Ezra shortly thereafter.
Thank you Z100 out of NYC for helping me with my early musical adventures.

Having spent the first 23 years of my life in the woods, I know what dontoro is saying. I had seen maybe 10 shows total before I moved to Portland, but would have loved being dragged to shows as a youngster by parents or older siblings. Having seen over 200 shows in the past five years, I'm making up for lost time.
With that said, I was into Better Than Ezra back in the day, but I've never heard of Aimee Mann? I already realize I suck at this game.

That's because you're over five years of age.

DJ Lance is awesome. I saw him with the Aquabats. At Disneyland.
Aimee Mann was the singer of Til Tuesday and their hit song 'Voices Carry'. Other places you may recognize her include the soundtrack to P.T. Anderson's 'Magnolia' - for which she wrote all of the original songs and was nominated for an Oscar - and as the female nihilist who surrenders her toe in 'The Big Lebowski'. She is married to Michael Penn (brother of Sean Penn), who is a songwriter in a similar vein as Aimee. Aimee's "Bachelor No. 2" and Michael Penn's "Mr. Hollywood Jr. 1947" are two of my all-time favorite records. And if she ever brings her annual Christmas show to your town, don't miss it.

Oingo Boingo was my first show - I was twelve. I was a HUGE Oingo Boingo fan at twelve. I saw the last show they played before Elfman fired the horn section and shortened the band's name to Boingo for their final album. Pretty much every show I've seen since then has had to live in the shadow of that show.
I concede BTE, dontoro. It's not like I really think I'm the only surviving fan of 90's FM rock, but you can't blame me for wondering. Meanwhile, kudos on an uncharacteristically level-headed and well-reasoned post.
