Whats your favorite festival, Sasquatch goers? I've been to a number of these (Bonnaroo, Sasquatch, Coachella, & Lolla) and I would say that Sasquatch probably comes in 2nd. All the listed festivals have pros and cons; the all night party at Bonnaroo, the Sahara tent at Sasquatch, Lolla being in Chicago, the crazy party that is SXSW, etc. Whats your poison?
As for overall experience, I would say Bonnaroo. For amazing value without 70,000+ crowds, I would say Sasquatch. My favorite festival is no longer around - Vegoose, but I loved that mainly because it was in Vegas during football season and I got to see Daft Punk.

Psychicofficer- have you hit up any of the portland festivals? I loved musicfest nw and one that i'm looking forward to this august is Pickathon (mt. scott area).
Last year's Pickathon had blitzen trapper, dr. dog, alela diane, vetiver, thao with the get down stay down, and a bunch more local and more underground artists. Anyone been? Any feedback?

I went to one show of MFNW which was pretty good at Rotture. It was a bunch of electro-indie bands, or indietronic bands. Whatever you want to call it. I missed out on other shows because I was slack and did not get tickets in time.
I have not been to Pickathon. Looks pretty cool, maybe I'll check it out this year. I just moved to Portland from Atlanta last year so I'm still getting my bearings on the local music scene, which is awesome by the way.
Have you been to Pickathon? Whats your take?

Yeah no kidding about nobody voting. I think people seem to stick in the "Sasquatch Related" section and forget this is down here.
As far as Pickathon goes, I actually haven't been either. Stumbled across it on the consequence of sound website. When I went to the festival's website, it looked like my type of gig. For some reason I've been all about the indie-folk and I love the minimalist festival idea.
How was Atlanta's scene? If I'm not mistaken, isn't the metal genre pretty big in the South? I really think you're in for a treat in Portland. I'd buy a wristband for MFNW this year and scope out as many of the venues as possible.

Atlanta's music scene was pretty solid. Plenty of good hip-hop (got to see OutKast a couple of times, once in the Fox Theater which was awesome). Plus you had some good indie acts - Black Lips, Deerhunter, Of Montreal (they are from Athens but only about an hour away). There was plenty of jam bands that come through Atlanta and Widespread and Sound Tribe Sector 9 always did multiple nights in Atlanta for NYE. So did Band of Horses a couple years back. I guess metal is big with Mastodon, but I wasn't really into that scene that much. Although I lived right next to Masquerade which was the local metal venue.
Plus it was only about a 4 hour drive from Bonnaroo, so I went to that 3 times. Atlanta was great for music. Lots of good venues like the Fox, Tabernacle, and Variety Playhouse.
I'll definitely be more on top of the MFNW bands this year. I live pretty close to downtown where alot of the venues are. When you get the band is it a pain in the ass to get into the venue? Do you have to wait in line for hours or is it easy to get in?
Pickathon might be cool to check out. I'm not really into acoustic/folky rock but its starting to grow on me. I guess that starts happening once you move to the PNW. That and drinking great beers.

That's a strong indie group you've got right there. I've yet to catch Deerhunter but I'm hoping sometime this year I'll stumble into one of their shows.
The only long line I remember waiting in were the free shows at the Wonder Ballroom (Battles, Ratatat, Britt Daniel, Built to Spill) and I was still able to get in. That and I heard the band of the time (Vampire Weekend two years ago) was impossible but with SO many venues hosting shows at the same time, you'll have little problems. They do a pretty good job of matching similar artists, so you really don't have to hop around too much.
You gotta tell me about Bonnaroo! I've only been to the California/Oregon/Washington festivals and have always wanted to catch Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits in particular

Bonnaroo is a great festival. The music starts at 11:00 am and goes up until 5:00 am with the late night sets. Its definitely a party. But its super hot and muggy in Tennessee in June so it can be miserable during the day. But there are like 5 main stages and 5 other smaller stages with comedy, jazz, acoustic, etc. Best overall experience for a festival that I have been to. But its 90,000 people and many people feel like it has gone too mainstream. I have not gone the past two years, so I don't know how the crowds are anymore.

The wristband is cool if you are planning on attending a lot of early shows, and bouncing around. I bought a wristband a couple years ago, and will never buy one again. The longest lines I have seen to enter a venue by far is at MFNW, and once the venue reaches capacity of wristbanders, it is one out, one in, so you might be waiting an hour even if you are near the front of the line.
Wednesday and Sunday of the festival only have a couple shows, so the lines are even worse. The last few years, I've bought a ticket to the premium shows I wanted to attend, for about $20 each, and paid the cover at the other shows I ended up attending. I paid around $85 for entrance during the festival, which is more than the $60 wristband, but I was guaranteed entrance to the three shows I really wanted to see.
The Roseland and Crystal Ballroom have the premium shows, and each is about 1,400 capacity. I'm guessing they sell about 400 tickets, and reserve the other 1,000 for wristband holders, so if you are willing to show up early, the wristband works. It is nice being able to skip the first band, and show up whenever, and walk in past the hundreds waiting in line.
The VIP pass was $160 last year, and also guarantees you entrance everywhere, but that is only cost effective if you are going to go back and forth between the Roseland and Crystal Ballroom, since the covers at the other venues are less than $10.
If there is only one show you can't miss, get the wristband and buy a ticket to that show, then you are out $80. If there are a couple shows you can't miss, buy tickets to those shows, skip the wristband, and pay the cover at the other venues, then you are out about $80 as well.
Also, I voted for Sasquatch and Bonnaroo, even though I've never been to Bonnaroo. I've been to non-camping festivals, so I know car camping festivals is where it's at.

out of that list, i went with bonnaroo. however, my fav fest is jam cruise!!! happens the first sunday of the year, takes off from ft lauderdale with different destinations every year, and you get to party with the musicians seeing as how they have nowhere to go. also, the music is literally non-stop from the time the boat disembarks, with the exception of when you are at port.

im not sure i follow your question. basically, they start with a band right at disembarkation (about 7:30 pm on sunday), and the music will go on in the disco or jam room until anywhere from 4 am to 9 am. generally after that you can find some of the musicians just chilling on the pool deck doing acoustic songs (not like the whole band), or in the atrium where the glass piano is. pretty much like that everyday, with the exception of the days you are at port.

It was a joke about jam bands playing songs that last forever, while they "jam." Thanks for the extra info though. I can't imagine that being anything more than spectacular, even if they only play one song.

lol...im horrible with internet humor/sarcasm. while some "jam" songs can get annoying, i think for the most part improvisation differentiates a decent musician from an amazing musician. im sure some will totally disagree with me, but it is just my opinion. any band can play the same songs, in the same manner, day in and day out. however, a band that can improv at any moments notice makes it more phenomenal, to me. btw, i would say the whole improv thing does not fit most bands style.

I just went to Springfest in Live Oak Florida. Was the one of the best festivals I have been to thus far. The camp grounds were serene, on a lake, not far from Tallahassee of Jax.
But I'm really looking forward to DelFest this year. I have been hearing great things from folks in bluegrass/folk/americana scene. Tix are only 140 now, but do go up like April 12th. Del, the legend himself!, is playing 3 sets. It's the same weekend as SummerCamp, which has a nice line-up, but I'm thinking this is going to be the place to be this summer.
