This.

But generic or not, I will say I appreciate that he raps about culturally relevant social justice issues and I'll admit he seems to radiate positivity. I was walking past the Bigfoot Stage in 2011 just as he came out in drag, it was amusing but nothing about the sounds coming out of those speakers compelled me to stick around. The real question is, what would Dave Niehaus think?

I'm genuinely curious since I don't often listen to hip-hop, but who are these other artists that Macklemore sounds like that give him a generic label?

Rapping about culturally relevant social justice issues is the #1 thing I just plain do not care to hear about in rap music. Or any music. I get enough of that just walking around in the world, I don't need to be sermonized through my headphones. Like, I get it, Bob Marley same same same. Does it make me a bad person that I just don't care about these things? If so, whatever. I like to watch cartoons and not give a shit, that's just my deal.

I don't listen to much hip-hop either but the Macklemore hits that play all over this city don't ever stand out as unique or different or "ooh, what's this?". If I had to name other artists that my brain lumps into the same category I'd say Blue Scholars, Common Market, A Tribe Called Quest. In the 90's when A Tribe Called Quest were getting popular people were like, "Heyy, what's this?" Macklemore didn't do that for me. But I appreciate that it's not all tits n ass and gunz and drugz.

What causes me to take interest in any rap music is unique/interesting/unusual production. Listening to some dude talk angry over factory-produced beats does nothing for me.

I think he sounds a lot like Atmosphere.
Also Blue Scholars.

I listen to a reasonable amount of hip hop, and I still don't get what they're trying to say. I'm relatively new to Macklemore and I'm still going through his catalogue, but I'd hardly call him "generic". Sure he's not like Death Grips because that shit is right out of left field. But from what I've heard so far, Macklemore has a bit of variety to him. He has some down right cheese songs (i'm betting these are the high radio play ones), some funk/soul, some down right comedy songs, and some deep chunes. You can say you don't like what you've heard, but I think the term generic is a poor choice.

By 'generic', I meant 'boring'. By 'boring', I mean 'boring to me'. By 'boring to me', I mean 'not out of left field like Death Grips'. He's like the Foo Dr. Garbanzohters of rap. Like, 'yes, this is rap music, great job'.

No I think CHUD is right. The Mariners routinely finish in the top half of payroll, and bottom half of wins. Dave Niehaus was old, but he wasn't blind.

If you take away Macklemore's lyrical directness (his best or worst quality depending on who you talk to), he sounds like pretty much every other socially conscious white backpack rapper of the last couple decades. Some of his songs sound silly like Mac Miller and some sound serious like Atmosphere.

I'm not trying to insult him or anything, but his sound is hardly revolutionary.

Macklemore doesn't drop guillotines in the 21st century and is therefor not original.
