Haha, fucking Live. I seriously had no idea they kept going after Secret Samadhi. My little brother is/was a Live superfan. I have to admit that 'The Beauty of Gray' is a fucking excellent song, but god damn did they suck.

I haven't spent a lot of time with live albums, so maybe this will enlighten me. I think early on I found that it was hard to catch the live experience in an audio format, so I've avoided them. I really dig Daft Punk - Alive. I have started downloading a lot of live dj sets, but that is not the same thing. Alive is basically a live dj set isn't it? I was recently checking out some of the live Phish albums. They have many to choose from.

Awesome dude. Awesome, dude. I just thought about this and was wondering if anyone was going to call me on my druggie bullshit.

Let's roll with live albums as planned with the following schedule until someone does what I did. Send your gripes my way if you have a conflict with the dates, and let me know if you'd like to be added. I'll do it right this time, swearsies.

8/19: badchoices
8/26: CHUD
9/2: Lumpy
9/9: Gramma
9/16: blacksmile
9/23: FD
9/30: Burrito

THE MARS VOLTA - SCAB DATES

This album is polarizing in the sense that a lot of people don't consider it a true live album. In an interview with AV Club Omar said:
"I listened to my favorite live records, and said, "Okay, that's nice. What would I want as a fan?" When I was a kid, I always wanted little moments about the band on tour, so I could imagine them in my head. You hear our live record, and it starts with sound check and our technicians speaking about what's wrong with the microphone. And then there's us backstage, and then it goes into the concert, and then in the middle of a song, I put in some conversations we had on the tour bus. All these things are really appealing to me. A lot of people who were upset said, "This is not a live album. It includes all this other bullshit. And it has overdubs!" It has no overdubs, it was just mixed in a creative way"

The Mars Volta's De-Loused In The Comatorium (and Hail To The Thief) are what opened my mind to listening (REALLY listening) to music back in 2002. That is not that long ago. Prior to that music was not a big part of my life. What draws me to TMV is they are always moving/changing. This live album might not be for everybody. There are really only 3 actual songs spanning 72:54. Cicatriz alone is over 40 minutes long. If you have ever seen Get Him To The Greek the song that Jonah Hill is rocking out to is taken from Take The Veil from this record.

I would highly recommend listening to this one if you are by yourself or with people that don't yap when you are listening. It is a weird and psychedelic journey that deserves to be listened to all the way through if at all. Below are some random stoned ramblings I jotted down (not going to edit, they don't make sense sometimes...oh well).

****

Strange baby cries and Spanish announcements similar to what you would hear in an airport. Random drum beats. Once you make it to the guitars you are on the cusp of Take The Veil Cerpin taxt.

Take The Veil: Talking in in his sleep again!

Spaced out wah wah wah wah wah ooooooooooooooooh….Omar freaks out for a bit. Damn you Cedric you get me pumped.

End Side A. on to SIDE B!

After some more spaced out noises we get a track off of their first release Concertina. I have never seen any songs off of Tremulant but this makes me mad that I haven’t. Loving the keys here. Swaying my hips and cookin chicken. (Tremulant on vinyl (autographed) was the first record I ever got and it was a gift from my future wife!)

Weird sounds…mini breakdown….can hear some Cicatriz lyrics but not quite into Ciccatriz….lots o’ keys…UH OH! CICATRIZ HAS LANDED…Do you recall his name?

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIM DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEFEEEEEEECTED

Bow down to Omar. Holy Toledo. Alright, mind melted a bit come on keys and Cedric lets bring it back to earth.

Porno breakdown. Wowchickawowwow END SIDE B

SIDE C

Cicatriz continues in epic fashion. One large rockout with your cockout. Once you hear Cedric’s voice again watch out. Make sure your head is screwed on tight otherwise you might lose it. Fucking rad. End Side C

Side D

Whirlpool of noises from songs and the airport noises and voices and mariachi and more Spanish voices…lost track of listening and then they bring it back. Good job fellas.

Here is a grooveshark link http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/SCABDATES/3893047

If you find it on vinyl, it has some wicked artwork. This is always the way I would recommend (i will post those photos when I can take pics of the vinyl)

As Cedric says at the end of this record "go home and take a bath"

Thanks man, I hadn't listened to it for a long time but then we started the live albums idea. It was cool to revisit and it makes me so mad that I have never been able to see them headline a show. Its always been opening or festivals (open for RHCP, open for System of a Down, Endfest and Sasquatch). One of these days....

The only time I saw them headline a show was by far the worst I've ever seen them. One of the worst shows I've ever been to in fact.

That's too bad. When I saw them with RHCP in Vancouver it was them at their best. That show was off the chain crazy. We were only about 8 feet from the front and I danced my ass off (everyone around me were there for RHCP and looking at me and my friend like we were out of our minds)
