First time I have ever heard of this project, but very interesting. I think half the time it really works, and half the time it's a big hot mess. When they hit it right, it's pretty freaking great (I loved the Kanye/Likki Li and the RZA/Frusciante chunes). A couple songs didn't do anything for me at all though ("Money" and the Tom Waits song especially).

I agree the album isn't fantastic beginning to end. I'm not a big fan of the George Clinton song, and I agree, the Tom Waits songs is pretty much a miss. I blame the Game though, I've never really understood his non-rhyming style. "Money" however, is one of my favorites on the album, Chuck D kicks tail in that song.

I agree on the clinton song being pretty horrible but I actually kind of love the waits song

The Chuck D verse is freaking awesome, but there's so much going on in the song it kind of falls off the rails for me. Especially that reggae rap thing....
Another chune I really liked was the ODB/Karen O track.

I wish David Byrne's songwriting had held up as well as his voice has. He always sounds so great on these compilations (and he shows up on a LOT of them). He's always asked to throw down on tracks that already have kind of a Latin flavor, and there are automatically echoes of late-era Talking Heads. Under those circumstances even I am quick to forget how uninspired most of his recent solo material is.
I usually object to these collab things which pit white pop singers against hip-hop artists but there's some pretty good stuff on here so far. More thoughts later.

Little known HG factoid: Much like Gunther loves to hear the sound of horsies in recorded music, I am a sucker for a beat constructed from the sounds of a touch-tone phone.

That is the best part of the album (aside from Kanye West of course).

What did you think of that Byrne and Fatboy Slim project/collab/concept album/hot fucking mess from last year? That was so bizarre. I tired really hard to like it, especially since Byrne and Fatboy Slim are two of my all time favorite artists, but it was awful.

Yeah it was fucking terrible. A concept album about fucking Imelda Marcos? You just know that was his baby and he got nuts deep into it before he realized he couldn't pull it off on his own (or was unwilling to take all of the blame for it). Even that last album he did with Brian Eno (Everything That Happens Will Happen Today) was utterly limp.

I have to admit I'm liking this thread more and more. Already I've started going through some stuff I haven't listened to in a while, to see whether it would be worth posting here when my eventual turn comes around.
I actually think I've already Dr. Garbanzoured out what I want to do, but it will also depend on the other stuff people post here between now and then. And no, it's not EDM. I promise.

Am I the only one that gets a serious girl talk vibe from the whole album? Maybe I don't listen to enough dance mixes and they all sound like this but the way that it jumps between so many different artists and the beats never really stop reminds me of a girl talk mix

This is what the schedule looks like so far. If you are not brand spanking new, and would like to be added to the list, let me know. I'm terrible at mind reading, so for a couple of you, I wasn't able to decipher 100% if you are wanting to participate. Remember, the only rule is you have to play along by listening to the albums suggested.
If anyone has a problem with the week they have been assigned (vacation or something), let me know, and I'll move you to a different week.
6/26: N.A.S.A. - Spirit of Apollo (know ID yuh) 7/3 (cbats) 7/10 (drew) 7/17 (bradberad) 7/24 (stormypinkness) 7/31 (wompwomp) 8/7 (lumpy) 8/14 (J-Dawg)

I don't get the Girl Talk vibe at all. Girl Talk talk mashes up existing material by 10+ acts/bands per song. To the best of my knowledge, all the sounds on the NASA album are original, and they are collaborations rather than mashes. Girl Talk also uses a lot of ghetto rap, while NASA is geared more towards pop rap.
By the way, apparently the Game sounds a lot like Kool Keith. No one pointed out my gaff earlier in this thread.

Yeah This. When I first heard this album a while back, I thought it was a mash up thing like Girl Talk, but then I realized I didn't recognize any of the songs, and I remember the Pitchfork review mentioning these guys' celebrity Rolodex's being big. I do believe that this is all original content, which is part of what makes the album so cool; like, how the fuck did you talk all these people into this?
