| | Album Of The Week « Thread Started on Jun 25, 2011, 1:05am » | |
Rules: 1. You should intend to listen to each album twice to participate. It's okay if you get behind, we all get busy. 2. The album you choose can't be your band, or your friend's band. It has to be somewhat accessible, so we can all track it down. As a rule of thumb, if it's not on Grooveshark (http://grooveshark.com/), it's probably too rare. 3. The album doesn't have to be your favorite, it should be an album that will generate discussion. There is no problem listing your favorite underrated album, but picking a classic album we've all heard is also encouraged. 4. Post your album as close to the Sunday you are signed up for. Don't post it before the previous work week is over (so Friday night is okay). If you are running behind, and can't write a review until later in the week, post your album early in the week, then write the review later. Part of the reason we want the album posted Sunday is so we all have a chance to find it. 5. Once we cycle through everyone who wants to play along, I'll start round two, and make the schedule in roughly the same order as listed below.
New To The Board/Late To The Game: You can still sign up. Again, you should intend on listening to the albums submitted. The more, the merrier. Many have to wait months to post their selection, so that gives ample time to catch up. Reviews are welcome, even if they are weeks/months later. It is never too late to sign up, or write a review, even if we are 100 albums deep. If we get that far deep, and you are new, you can always sign up, as long as you intend to keep up moving forward, and maybe check out a couple of the older albums if you have time.
Schedule: 1. N.A.S.A. - Spirit of Apollo (know ID yuh) 2. Slint - Spiderland (cbats) 3. Circulatory System - Circulatory System (drew) 4. The Lowest of the Low - Shakespeare My Butt...(bradberad) 5. Self - Breakfast With Girls (stormypinkness) 6. Brian Eno/David Byrne - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts (J-Dawg) 7. Frank Black - Teenager Of The Year (lumpy) 8. The Joel Plaskett Emergency - Down at the Khyber (wompwomp) 9. Man or Astroman? - Destroy All Astromen! (Comeswithasword) 10. Tom Waits - Mule Variations (FriendlyD) 11. Joe Jackson - Look Sharp! (HornedGramma) 12. Sloan - Twice Removed (Rustneversleeps) 13. Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream (Geno) 14. At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command (EMptY) 15. We Are The City - In A Quiet World (Souly) 16. The Tea Party - Splendor Solis (blacksmile) 17. The Cure - Disintegration (Stamper) 18. Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting (kymess_jr)
Round 2: The 60s
11/6 know ID yuh 11/13 cbats 11/20 drew 11/27 stormypinkness 12/4 J-Dawg 12/11 Lumpy 12/18 wompwomp 12/25 Friendly 1/1 Horned Gramma 1/8 Rusty 1/15 Geno 1/22 Empty 1/29 Blacksmile 2/5 Stamper 2/12 Kymess 2/19 Souly
So here is my quick review, and the first album of the week suggestion:
![[image] [image]](http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61IY8JEozHL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)
N.A.S.A - Spirit Of Apollo
I will try to refrain from making the joke, but I can't, "fucking N.A.S.A., how does it work?" Really though, I've never googled how they made it work. It's an album where everyone who is anyone in music recorded a soundbite, then someone named N.A.S.A. mixed them all together to make an album. The question remains, who the fuck is behind this? The album features David Byrne, Chali 2Na, Gift Of Gab, Chuck D, Karen O, Kanye West, George Clinton, Tom Waits, etc, etc, etc,. How does it work?

I should also say the quickest way this thread got off track when I tried this a couple years ago was when people started suggesting ten albums at a time. It then became too much to comprehend.
As for NASA, the first two minutes of Whachadoin makes me smile to this day, and the Kanye song rules. The two David Byrne songs are great also.

I really like this idea, here is a link for this groove shark playist if you're so inclined:
http://grooveshark.com/#/playlist/N+a+s+a+The+Spirit+Of+Apollo/39744706
EDIT: Wikipedia says it has 18 tracks, but this playlist only has the 17 original tracks. I'm pretty sure the 18th track is an extra or something.

Oh man, these guys played at my school last year but I had no idea who they were. I liked their set and then promptly forgot about them.
I'm glad we're doing this.
Thanks for the link, Rust

I'm into this too. Also, I can't say no to an album that features kool keith and tom waits on the same track.

A+ thread. Whoever booed you off the stage was an idiot.
I will carefully consider my eventual post since I'm a ways down in the pecking order and have a while to think about it.
Oh, and A+ first album of the week. So 2 A+es in one reply.

I think I originally confused them for N.E.R.D.

I just have to say what a cool idea. I've been getting some great music that I've never listened to before from the now playing thread, but it can be a bit overwhelming what with the 100+ pages. (by the way, thanks for having such great taste in music everyone!)
Focus is good!

Cool idea Gunther, this could be fun.
My thoughts on the album:
First time I have ever heard of this project, but very interesting. I think half the time it really works, and half the time it's a big hot mess. When they hit it right, it's pretty freaking great (I loved the Kanye/Likki Li and the RZA/Frusciante chunes). A couple songs didn't do anything for me at all though ("Money" and the Tom Waits song especially).

Only got through one listen so I'll hold my comments till I listen a few more times but since the three guys you listed aren't jumping at the oppurtunity to do next weeks pick can I snag it (I'm pretty sure I have seniority on all of them)?

That's fine, cbats goes second then. Since there is no guarantee everyone here wants to participate, how about anyone interested in picking an album of the week just send me a PM. I put a weekly schedule in the first post of the thread, so I'll go through those interested, and form a schedule in the first post. Once we run out of boarders who want to suggest an album, I'll start the second round of selections. When it is your week, try to post your album as close to Sunday, which will usually mean Monday for most of us. I guess the only rule so far is you must be willing to listen to the other suggested albums in order for us to listen to your suggestion.
The albums you choose don't have to be strictly underrated, just an album you think everyone should know about. If you want to pick a Pink Floyd album, we can still revisit it and discuss it, even if most of us have already heard of it.
