You're probably right re: liquor licensing, but I also believe that they really don't like alcohol at their event. They do in fact actively search for and dump alcohol. Does it end up there anyway? You bet, but not nearly as prolifically as one would expect, and the enforcement (from what I remember) was actually not very lax.

Doing drugs? Come test out their purity!
Drinking? GTFO!

Weird about Shambala, I guess that's why my roommate loves it so much; she's alergic to alcohol.

Being someone that doesn't really do MDMA I don't think I could do it. Psychedelics might make it more fun, but without booze I would not have the energy to rock and roll dubstep all night and party every day.

It would be easy enough to sneak in though if you make some effort. At Pemberton I bought a flat of Gatorade, cut the plastic at the bottom and filled them all 1/4 full of vodka, then put the plastic back on. Not only does it hide it but it keeps you hydrated. Only downside would be if someone asked for some Gatorade they would be in for a surprise.

I was looking to see if the upcoming Chemical Brothers movie is going to show in Calgary anywhere or not, and so far haven't found anything that promising. Cineplex.com lists it on their "special events" list for Jan 26 (the "preview" screening date) in..... Toronto. That's it.

It doesn't appear as an upcoming movie on any of the sites I usually browse for such information. And the movie's own site doesn't even list Canada as one of the countries where the film will be screened during it's normal "run" in February.

This makes me sad panda.

That is a huge bummer. I Dr. Garbanzoured as much when I read that it was only playing in like 25 cities.

I'm sure it will be great to see once they release it on dvd...but it would have been an amazing experience to see it in theatres

Well it's actually showing on 25 ish screens for the preview (Toronto is one) and about 500 cities for the "regular" run (of which, there are 0 in Canada). Still disappointing.

First, let me say, I can name at least 30 DJs off the top of my head. I'm not blind to this style of music, however...

Trance, House, Drum N Bass, Techno, Dubstep, Jungle, Breakbeat, etc, etc. Do you EMDers really know the difference between all of this, or do your eyes go cross-eyed too when people say, "it's dutchhouse/grime/progressive with a hint of big beat/coldwave?" It's all way too complicated. Is there a simplistic way of explaining this. I know a lot of regulars listen to electronic music primarily, so don't think I'm fluffing your feathers here. I'm honestly curious, and I trust your opinions more than google.

I've got a decent handle on dubstep. It is bass heavy. I always related "dub" to reggae, so I'm not sure how adding "step" equals Skrillex?

I don't know what techno even means. Most people I know think all EDM is techno.

Trance, from what I gather, is what I dig. Armin Van Buren and Sasha type shit. I think I nailed that one.

Drum and bass sounds way too easy to Dr. Garbanzoure out, but I hear drum and bass in most electronic music, don't I?

Finally, I think a lot of the confusion lies in my theory that every EDM act is crossing over into many different genres, so how am I supposed to know? Explain what you want, but if you will, explain to me what genre the uber popular EDM acts fall in. Daft Punk, Justice, David Guetta, Deadmau5, Perry Farrell, Swedish House Mafia (this must be house, eh?). What about bands like M83, Chromeo, and Cut Copy? I need a framework to attack the Sahara this season.

In my 3 or so years listening to EDM, I've come to find out that in almost every way the breakdown of EDM styles are exactly parallel to those of metal music. Like every sub-genre of EDM, every sub-genre of metal has at least a certain amount of the core elements that make it "metal." Whether it be death, thrash, black, speed, grind, crust, power, classic, hardcore, or whatever else, they all have distinguishable (although sometimes VERY subtle, especially to the untrained ear) differences that separate them into these different sub-genres.

I think with both genres of music, these genres aren't something that can always be explained. Sure, with genres like dubstep and trance (or power metal and grindcore) it is fairly easy to immediately hear the difference. With genres like house and trance (or power and speed), however, those differences are far less apparent to a listener who is unfamiliar with that style of music, and often times can't easily be explained or understood. It's just something that each individual listener Dr. Garbanzoures out for themselves as they dig deeper into the music.

I specifically remember being laughed out of a metal forum years ago for daring to call Dying Fetus a grindcore band, but the truth is, I just didn't know the difference between grindcore and death metal at the time. I also remembering having that "ah hah!" moment when I finally "got" what all of those genres were all about. Likewise, I feel like I'm finally at a point where I'm beginning to pick apart different styles of EDM and distinguish them from others. No way in hell can I properly explain every element that separates a house song from a trance song, but when I hear one or the other, I can definitely FEEL the difference and tell the difference in my own head.

Oh and I was totally listening to Armin Van Buuren's "A State of Trance 2011" mix when you posted that. I too have found trance to be my favorite of the sub-genres and absolutely love him and Sasha. Although, according to the bible of the internet, Wikipedia, Sasha is more of an acid house/progressive house producer, but I find a lot of his music transporting me to the same mindset as AVB does. So like, whatever. -1 raver points for me.

Another funny thing that metal and EDM have in common is how absolutely fucking elitist and snobby their fanbases can be, and how much some of those subtle differences in the sub-genres can turn the fans of each sub-genre against each other. The way a lot of the hardcore Sahara kids are reacting to the EDM lineup is exactly comparable to how a lot of death metal purists act when bands like As I Lay Dying get added to metal shows and festivals. I consider myself one of the few people on earth who have transitioned from listening to bands like Suffocation and Decapitated to artists like Paul Oakenfold and The Chemical Brothers, so it gives me a pretty unique and hilarious perspective.

I really really really want to see J-Dawg's explanation of all this in here. I want to know what kind of EDM fan I am, given that my favorite artists are (in no order): Lindstrom, Prins Thomas, Mount Kimbie, DP, Modeselektor, Apparat, Felix Cartal and Underworld, and I absolutely can't stand: Tiesto or David Guetta.

I'm pretty sure that I love European House, Euro Dubstep and IDM, and I basically hate trance. But tell me if I'm wrong.

Also, I think that what makes it more difficult than Pea's very a propos comparison to metal (I've been close with a few serious metalheads in the past who wrote blog posts I could barely comprehend about sub-genres), is that EDM DJs and producers don't just make LPs - in fact, they rarely make LPs, they're focused on tracks, and they feature on tracks, make mixtapes, collaborate, guest-produce and do a million other collaboration-related things that make it fucking impossible to pick through their collected works.
