I really do like his first album, but the new overhyped album isn't that great.
But I guess since pitchfork says it's good, that's why other people are saying it's good.

I'm one of the bigger fans on here but it's clearly not for everyone. If you don't enjoy Yonkers it's probably not gonna be for you. If Goblin is the only thing you listened though, you should know it's really not the best place to start. Mellowhype's blackenedwhite and Earl Sweatshirt's Earl are much better albums.

I still promise I will listen to blackenedwhite. I keep forgetting to, though.

no worries, but definitely give it a listen when you can. I think everyone who doesn't understand the appeal of odd future should give it a listen because it's only the fun parts of their sound, and barely any of the rape-y misogynistic stuff that permeates everything Tyler does.

Yeah there isn't really a way to justify his lyrics. More think pieces have been written about this than pretty much anything else in music over the last year. I think NPR's story was called something like "why you should listen to odd future even though it's hard."
I think most of his fans at this point are really hoping he grows up soon because the songs he does that aren't so violent are much more interesting. It's really easy to dismiss all of his music because of the lyrics but there really is a lot more going on that causes people to look past them.

Absolute, utter horse shit. Check about six or seven pages back in the Now Playing Thread and you'll get plenty of insight on Tyler.

did someone get confused and think they were playing sasquatch? am i confused and ARE they playing sasquatch? god, i hope not.
The thing is, I get the whole shock value thing. I get the edgy i-want-to-scare-old-white-people thing (tyler's words, not mine). I just don't get how everyone romanticizes it as if it were Ginsberg or Henry Miller or something.

lumps is going to see them at Pitchfork I think, that's why I was recommending them.
By far the best review I've read of goblin is this one: http://www.cokemachineglow.com/record_review/6213/tylerthecreator-goblin-2011
It's pretty negative but it also highlights what is exciting about the whole odd future crew (outside of goblin)
This part explains my problems with goblin really well:
Quote:| There’s nothing remotely radical about doubling back on everything you say and do; there’s nothing cool about feigning indifference at the first sign of dissent or retort. Tyler has no problem making reprehensible comments, but if you attempt to engage with what he’s doing on any level, well, he’s got you there: you’re just taking him too seriously. And if you try to dismiss it as trashy or juvenile? Well, he’s thought of that, too: he’s making music of substance because he’s working through deep psychological issues of his own. Goblin revels in this back and forth, whether by adding extremely lame “disclaimers” that attempt to cancel out the “shocking” content of the music they precede or by acknowledging potential criticisms with his “psychologist” alter-ego only to laugh them off as jokes, and the net result is an album which attempts to be both serious art and nothing worth getting serious about. And it tries really, really hard to look like it doesn’t care. |
|
His first album (bastard) was a lot more fun because he actually didn't care what other people thought and the outrageous lyrics actually sounded outrageous. On goblin they just sound corny.

There we go. There's a valid criticism that makes more sense. I suppose now I can chalk all those people on FB up to folks who have followed the herd. There can't be that many suburban white girls who "get it".

no probably not. Don't mistake all these criticisms for me saying that there isn't merit in there. Goblin probably has 6 or 7 killer tracks. Bastard is a really good album, and pretty much everything odd future has done is worth giving a listen to. Goblin is just a classic sophomore slump and it's a damn shame that it's going to be the way most people are introduced to odd future.

Decided to see what the hullabaloo about this guy's lyrics is all about, picked a song on Songmeanings:
They say success is the best revenge so I beat Deshay up with a stack of magazines I'm in. Oh, not again, another critic writing report- I'm stabbin' any blogging f*g**t hipster with a Pitchfork.
Yeah! f*g**ts!
