I wasnt on the board after that year but I didnt hate it. I was also drunk as fuck joking with my friends that when they restarted that one song 5 times it was a performance piece and they were trying to see how many people they could get to leave.

For me, it got especially amazing after that constant restart of Rattled by the Rush. After that, they got a lot more adventurous with their playing. After those restarts they realized, "Fuck it. There's no way we're going to win this crowd over." So instead of being overly self-conscious and worried about playing everything exactly right as they seemed to have done with the other shows I saw, they really had fun with it and just decided to rock out. It reminds me of the recordings of shows I listened to back from the Wowee Zowee era. When something works it doesn't, but when it does, it's something great.
Alright stepping off the pedestal. Also just realized the continuing theme of celebratory deserts during the Sunday (sub)headliners. Before the Pavement set, they gave everybody in the front pints of Ben and Jerry's to celebrate Malkmus' birthday. Then of course there was Flaming Lips cake. Also, more surrealness, Flava Flav came up front in the security area in front of the fence right before Pavement and shook my hands and was rocking out to the beginning of Pavement's set. Everything about that night was surreal for me.

Cool you even mentioned Malkmus' birthday, because there are several factors involved in why Pavement wasn't the greatest show for non Pavement fans.
1. Jet Lag: They played in Europe a day or two before Sasquatch. 2. Malk's Birthday: He may have been drunk. 3. Massive Attack: They lost their headlining spot to Massive Attack at the last minute. 4. Kooks: Malk and the Jicks were pushed back almost an hour because of the Kooks in 2008, meaning they had to play a lot of their set opposite The Cure.
Malkmus had many reasons to not give a shit about that performance, and from what I've heard from Pavement fans, that's what they wanted to see. I enjoyed it.

This definitely makes sense. I feel that's probably analogous to the way that my experiences seeing GBV drunk with friends who know all the words are way different then the GBV sets I've seen with friends who are sober who maybe only know Gold Star for Robot Boy and only somewhat.
However, that Pavement set was even able to transcend the fact that I was sober and by myself surrounded by a bunch of Massive Attacks who were all looking at their watches just waiting for that Pavement set to be over all of this after standing at the front of the main stage for 9 hours at that point enduring shit like the hell that was the Kid Cudi set (though perks included being front and center for They Might Be Giants).

And if anybody is curious about the Wowee Zowee era shows I was mentioning, this show and a Deerhoof show are my 2 favorite live recordings ever:

Everything you just said is very true. I remember Malk mentioning on stage all the champagne they were drinking before hand with LCD.
And in regards to the Massive Attack lineup change, a great quote from Bob Nastanovich: "Last time Pavement were at the Gorge we played Lollapalooza and we were put between Sinead O'Connor and Cypress Hill. Now we have been put between LCD Soundsystem and Massive Attack. Both times we were destined to fail." (That may not have been word for word, but it was something along those lines.)
Another great Malk quote: "Hey guys! Let's pretend like we're still in Spain and drunk and having fun!"
(Which brings me back to why it kills me I wasn't at that Primavera.)
Man, I wish there was a recording of the Sasquatch set somewhere.

I wonder how much of the negative reaction to the pavement set was due to the technical difficulties. I know they're not going to win over most of the crowd but the vehement hatred for that set seems out of place.

I honestly don't remember They Might Be Giants playing an entire set of flaccid renditions of the lesser tracks off of their children's albums, but I know that it happened.
