Was someone playing Kraftwerk last night? I'm in the same boat as HG. I need a proper introduction to them.
Suggestions, nick?

Yeah, HG and I (and Friendly Destroyer? I think?) were having a Kraftwerkgasm at one point.
You can approach Kraftwerk in a lot of different ways. If you're looking to jump into it from a pop perspective, you'll probably want to go with Man Machine. It's probably their most accessible album, and it's great, but it lacks the ridiculous experimentation of their earlier stuff (I, II, Ralf und Florian).
I ended up starting with Autobahn, because that was how long it took my dad to take me to the doctor when I was a kid. I thought it was really fucking fun to say the phrase "Fun Fun Fun on the Autobahn" (a mistranslation: they're saying Fahren, which means "drive"). It also helped that parts of it are pure electro-bliss. It wasn't until much later I realized that "Autobahn" - the song - was a 22 minute long masterpiece that was one of the most influential songs of its era and a huge step forward for electronic music. Here's a list of what was pioneered in this one mammoth of a song:
Electronic percussion pads, played by Wolfgang Flür. Use of a classic 'Moog bass' sound to play the bass line, playing an octave riff with added analogue echo. Liberal use of phasing on synths to play the chords. Use of a vocoder to process some of the vocals. Use of the so-called 'motorik' 4/4 drum beat in the song's final section.
That shit was released in 1975. And it sounds like it could've come out last year. It holds up insanely well, and continues to be relevant to this day. At one point you might think you're listening to a B-side from some DFA dance-punk band, and the next second you're grooving to a bassline that's oddly reminiscent of "Oblivion" by Grimes. Then throw in lyrics that sound like an homage to "Fun, Fun, Fun" by the Beach Boys. It blows my mind.
So I would, unsurprisingly, recommend Autobahn. Try to get yer mits on a decent copy, especially if you go the digital route. There are so many melodies played over each other and phasing(!), you'll want to play it loud. The other four songs on the record are great, too, especially "Kometenmelodie 2", but "Autobahn" is the main event here, and even Kraftwerk knew it - it's the A-side. I swear to god sometimes "Autobahn" is better than sex.
I should not write about Kraftwerk after chops. I have way too much to say.

Kind of a curveball with Metallica at the end, but that's a damn fine list of dark ass motherfucking classic black metal.

That it is. I have never really paid much attention to the extreme shit before. Not sure if I would say I'm a converted fan but the music itself is amazing. The vocals are a bit too brutal and abraisive even for my seasoned metal palete. The Metallica mellowed my mood a bit.

You should look into Ihsahn. It's the singer of Emperor's solo endeavor ever since Emperor broke up. It definitely still has a lot of black and extreme metal elements, but with a bunch of avant-garde experimentation and jazz beautifully sprinkled in. Emperor's last album Prometheus hinted at that sound, but with Ihsahn completely on his own now he's really expanded upon it in ways that you never really hear within that genre of music. His latest album Eremita is the best starting point if it's something you're interested in checking out.

Will do, thanks Pea. Have you ever seen Mayhem live before? They've played a shithole pub here in the past but I have been too scared to go.

I've either seen Mayhem or Marduk. I can't remember which one it was though. I was always a death metal and grindcore fan during my metal years. I've only really starting appreciating black metal within the past 4 years or so. Emperor was always the one black metal band that I absolutely loved since day one of my exploration into extreme music.

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
I'm certain this will end up being in the top ten 'best albums of the decade,' and we have a long way to go.
