The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.
I feel bad for talking shit about my beloved Flaming Lips lately, I'm giving it a proper listen and wading through the bullshit tracks to find the gems.
Edit: Oops, the pic belongs in another thread.

Reminds me of a story my mom always tells:
There were three brothers, and their father was the king. On the first brother's birthday, he told his father, All I want in the world is a majestic ship with which to sail the oceans. And so his father bought him a ship. The second brother, on his birthday, told his father All that I would like for MY birthday is a castle that is half as grand as yours. And so that is what he received.
The third brother, on his birthday, came to his father with a simple wish. Father, all I would like for my birthday is a pony -- a faithful steed and friend with which to explore the countryside of this beautiful land. His father led him to a room, opened the door, shoved the third brother inside and closed the door behind him. All there was in the room was a massive pile of shit, reaching almost to the ceiling.
After a couple of hours, the two older brothers came in to laugh at their younger brother over the cruel trick they had convinced their father to play. But when they found the third brother, he was playing happily in the shit: digging holes through it, making piles in the corners, and laughing all the while.
When the two older brothers asked him what, exactly, he was so happy about, the younger brother smiled and said, With all this shit, there just HAS to be a pony under this pile somewhere!!
...it was supposed to be about optimism or something, I dunno.

I should indicate that my mother didn't use the word 'shit' when she told that story.

Hahah, yeah still looking for the Pony. But mostly I want to know what your mom was using the metaphor to describe.
So far the Jim James and Lightning Bolt tracks are the closest to the pony we've come. And I do enjoy both the Erykah Badu and Amanda Palmer versions of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, not that they hold a candle to Roberta Flack.
And surprisingly, I'm digging (digging... haha) the Edward Nutsack and Chris Martin tracks (cue da backlash).

I never quite understood myself. She often abbreviates that story by telling me to just keep lookin' for that pony when I'm having a hard day. After a certain point I stopped pointing out to her that there is no pony because it would just make her sad.

That EP with Lightning Bolt kicks ass. Lightning Bolt kicks ass. HG just listened to Lightning Bolt: don't they just kick ass? I can't wait for Lightning Bolt to kick my ass tomorrow. My ass. Their boots. Kicking.
That note from your kid kicks ass. Can you bring home some of those stickers of the panda playing bass and stuff? Because they kicks ass.

I've always enjoyed Lightning Bolt, when I'm in the mood for them. I bought Wonderful Rainbow when it was released about ten years ago and felt pretty good about it then, in spite of the fact that music that sounds like Animal from the Muppet Show having an aneurysm has never really been my bag.
I've listened to Hypermagic Mountain and Earthly Delights a dozen times or so each, but I generally end up switching to Wonderful Rainbow just because I like it better.

Nadine, have you ever heard Zaireeka? Done it properly, I mean. Lined up four jamboxes and coordinated simultaneous starts for all four discs and all that shit?
I know it's become more readily available in the intervening years, but I have one of the 2500 original copies on CD that were released in 1997. I haven't heard it in years because it's just too damn difficult to manage with only one person; if you've never experienced it, we might have to see what we can do about that in a couple weeks. It was the zenith of Uncle Wayne's goofy experimentation.

Fuck posting on phones. I lost an entire hour this morning (evening) drafting not one but two(!) separate posts that were probably my most long-winded in board history on the subject of Lightning Bolt.
I have to leave soon for MMJ, but basically:
Wonderful Rainbow is my sentimental favorite. People say "that album changed my life", well, this along with Melt-Banana's Cell Scape changed my entire perception of sonic possibilities, and are directly responsible for my continued fascination with listening to and playing experimental music.
That being said, Hypermagic Mountain look me over a year to digest upon its release. That fucker is dense, but I like to strongly encourage everyone who is willing and able to perservere, as I now hold it to be an ultimate noise-rock album from a band in pinnacle form. The peaks are buried deep within the valleys, but once they are discovered the reward is quite unlike any other I have experienced.
Earthly Delights attempts to expand even further (debatably not possible) into the possibilities of their DIY recording dynamic, but stylistically sounds like an amalgamation of everything they've done in the past. It's a very satisfying listen for super-fans.
If Bjork calls you up, you're doing it right.

We've been sitting on mp3's, waiting for the right moment to do this shit for literally 5 years. Your CD's sound like the right moment to do this shit.

If you have any spare jamboxes, we'll need to bring 'em with. Either that or we'll hit up the Goodwill. It's a real trip; some of my most favorite Lips material is on there.
I boggle at the thought of a die-hard Lips fan like Nadine having never heard 'The Big Ol' Bug is the New Baby Now'.
