Oh, I don't recall reading this. That sucks.

Drew can speak for himself, of course, but I believe he had something he had to do that weekend or something of that sort. Sad especially since me and him were gonna bro down during the GBV set.

Let's put it this way, if you were looking for a dance party, you were bored to death (I was around so many bros on ecstasy and molly very let down yet still trying to dance. Pretty hilarious.), but if you were wanting sonic bliss to wash over you, it was, well, sonic bliss.

And the set was kinda the polar opposite of what I imagine the Animal Collective set at Coachella being with the crazy technological sculpture working with. Instead the set design was about as "analog" as it gets, but needless to say pretty cool. There were many different screen sculptures that had lights and projections projecting into them from the inside (the crystal looking structures). There was also projection on the eyes and mouth of that crazy skull looking thing in the back.

Also, as I mentioned above, the full use of stereo was fucking great. For a good portion of the set, Avey Tare's vocals had an effect where his vocals were constantly wavering between the left and right speakers. Being front and center, I got full benefit of this constant panning. I've never experienced something like that in a live environment, and dammit, I'm a fan. I enjoyed it much more than the set I saw at Pitchfork in '08 (though that could possibly be because I was antsy as the afterparty show with King Khan and Jay Reatard was happening immediately after).

So to restate my thesis, if you're just wanting to dance, you may have come to the wrong place, but if you really listened and were able to enjoy the subtleties (though I can understand the argument that that would be much better in a headphone format), you fucking loved it like I did.

The set:

A few notes:
-So glad Deakin is back. He added something that I felt was missing last time I saw them.
-Panda Bear played drums the whole time with a pretty sweet-ass drumset which was just bass, snare, cymbal, giant shaker, and shekere (if you don't know what that is, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shekere ) on a hi-hat stand (which is fucking genius since the primary method of playing a shekere is by moving it up and down). He's an AMAZING drummer. Was reminded why he's sexually my fave.
-Geologist's role is way more important than I originally thought before. He IS the foundation of Animal Collective.
-Avey just bein' Avey. No need to say more.

The move to California ruined my Pitchfork plans. I bought the tickets before I accepted this job, then they named my start date as July 5th, so I couldn't go anymore. Way bummed, especially at missing GBV with lumps.

But that AC set sounds exactly like what I would want in an AC set. I'm glad they're getting back to live instruments, and yeah, Deakin and Geologist are not the Ringo Starrs of that band, they're hella important. My friend that went to pitchfork didn't see them (train got in late), but he said everyone he talked to said they sucked. I think expectations for an Animal Collective set post-MPP are turning a lot of people off to the band, because they're not going to throw a Yeasayer party, they're going to freak you teh fuck out. I love it.

People worried about sound panning, live instruments, Deakin n' shit. Lumpy back to the main issue at hand, were there any babies there? If so, did they fucking hate that shit?

Unfortunately I saw NO babies. Probably because they were long gone at the mere mention of Animal Collective. (These babies were probably the ones responsible for all the "Animal Collective sucked" reviews that Drew's friends overheard.)

COUNTERPOINT MOTHERFUCKERS

I saw Animal Collective in Prospect Park a week ago and it was fantastic. The crowd dug a bunch of the new songs and the four or five old songs all killed. Maybe it was because Black Dice opened and AnimCollec looked great in comparison, maybe being in Brooklyn made it better1, but it was a lot of fun and if you are expecting the new stuff you can bear it. We Tigers->Summertime Clothes is one of the best 1-2 punches I have ever experienced.2

Also there were no babies, which was nice.

Z3

1.4 Animal Collective in Prospect Park was stop two in a four-stop, two-week New York experience I'm currently taking in. The other parts were a Yankees game5; a sort of free-roam day which involved MoMA, running through Central Park to meet people, and an MP3 experiment; and, tomorrow, VIP Colbert Report tickets. Living anywhere else makes me really appreciate what I have when I do live here.
2. Halfway through We Tigers I realized I was dancing like Tiger Lily from Peter Pan and got self-conscious, but that dissipated after Summertime Clothes started and I jumped up and down6 until the beat dropped out.
3. Fuck you.
4. Yeah, I am currently reading Infinite Jest.
5. I saw Derek Jeter hit 2,998.
6. Is that pogoing? Did I pogo to AnimaCollecti?7
7. According to Lump, yes I did.
