I think the 'LIL' prefix rule is pretty safe to follow.

I've also noticed that a lot of contemporary hip hop is being mixed REALLY differently than it used to be. Specifically, the deep bass has been replaced by REALLY shrill treble. It's for the same porpoise, I think: the deep bass would rattle your trunk and people could hear it for blocks, but that piercing treble kind of achieves the same thing in an iPod world: it bleeds out of earbuds, and can be played on little cell phone speakers without losing most of the sound.

I had never thought of it like this before. Interesting...

not much else to say

The beat on the first track isn't bad, but not terribly complex. It's the lyrics in that one that didn't inspire me. As for the second track, it appears I had skipped that one in my sampling. It's not too bad at all. I'm actually surprised it's the same guy as the rest. The last three you posted are complete garbage, though. In my humble opinion.

I thought the same thing. Some of the tracks aren't half bad. But it actually gets worse then some of the ones he posted, see "I'm Miley Cirus". I did some research and apparently he claims to of recorded over 1000 tracks in 2010. So I guess with that many songs, some will be good and some will be bad. He should probly filter out the horrible more often.

I'm not at all surprised that he can crank out 3 of those gems per day.

here's another "non-based" lil b song (cudi's just on the hook)

i don't think anyone would argue based god doesn't have horrible songs.. but the dude is a complete eccentric & he's pretty much carving out an entirely new way of developing a music career

"I created O.F. (odd future) cause I feel we're more talented
Than 40 year old rappers talking about Gucci" -Tyler the Creator (Bastard)

I think the appeal of these groups isn't that they're the most talented or even really on the same level as someone like mos def but it's more that they represent the unbridled ambitions of 18 year olds who are doing whatever the fuck they want. I personally love the fact that anyone can record their own album and throw it on the internet. While most of it sucks, the stuff that makes it to the top can be incredible and wouldn't have been the same if they were forced to adhere to the demands of a label.

This is a really interesting essay on the whole internet rap star phenomenon

http://www.villagevoice.com/2011-01-19/m....ap-atomization/

But don't listen to me, instead here is a pic of mos def with OFWGKTA

So, I read the essay (aside: there's a great "notwithstanding" usage in there.) I think you sum it up well in the above, with the addition of ackbar's point that they're making music for kids (also mentioned in the article.) I never understood why my brother was into this sort of music (he is a few years younger) but now I feel I have a better grasp of it. Still not my bag, but that's how it goes. As has been said before: to each their own! Now I'm interested in checking out that OFKMFDM.

This list is compiled solely on the fact that I have seen these artists put on a good live show. I could name a ton of artists I would want to see, but a lot of rappers just don't translate well to a live audience.

Q-Tip
De La Soul
The Roots
Outkast (Big Boi by himself would also work)
Busta Rhymes
Kanye
Method Man & Redman
Lupe Fiasco
B.o.B
Jay-Z
