This one is my favorite definition from urbandictionary:

When one rants nonsensically and attributes the homoerotic things they say to a new style they invented.

based is derived from base cocaine.. the cooking/selling/smoking of crack.
lil b adopted it as an adjective to describe anything/everything about his swag

so.. to summarize:
lil b = based

This... right here... is my.... least favorite song:

I really don't understand the appeal of most of these internet hip hop groups that have been popping up recently. (The above is not an example of this; it's related by the themes of "swag" and "artists I dislike.") Lil B, Das Racist, LFMAO, etc. I realize these people/groups are very different, but I just don't get their appeal. I find that either their lyrics are unimaginative and boring, or their beats are. Or both. Das Racist at least has some quality lyrics, but their beats are simple and at times irritating. I tried a few times and just can't listen to their mixtapes all the way through, which is important for me to like an artist (normally applying to their albums.) I haven't checked out OFWGATK yet but I fear they'll fall under the same category for me. I know that even the greatest rappers had to start somewhere, so maybe these artists are still finding their groove, but I don't hold out too much hope.

Now, to be constructive. Bring back Mos Def! I've been a fan for ages and loved seeing him a couple years ago at the festival. While we're at it, grab Talib too. Black Star at Sasquatch would be amazing. They've been mentioned already, but I'd love to see Atmosphere too. I saw Slug at a small university gig back in '02 and really enjoyed it. I was pretty bummed when Wale canceled last year. Maybe he'll make up for it with an appearance this year. I wish there were more up-and-coming hip hop artists that I'd like to see, I just don't know of any. Who ever ends up making the line-up I'll check out. Hopefully I'll enjoy some of it!

I don't think it's fair to hold mixtapes to the same standard as you would an album. A mixtape is basically just an artist dumping all their ideas and getting them out there; an album is much more formal.

I'm really looking forward to a proper Das Racist album.

This is very true, but when mix tapes are all we're given and this is how I listen to music it doesn't translate very well. I don't want to adapt, dammit!

i could type a long diatribe about creativity, adapting to technology & the post-industry music world.. but probably the biggest thing to keep in mind is that artists like lil b, ofwgkta, soulja boy, etc are first/foremost making music for kids. it's ok to not like them

just don't be an arrogant prick about it. because as much as you (the arrogant prick) may think you're smarter/better than them.. you're likely to end up the one coming off ignorant & petty

Petty maybe, but not liking shitty music isn't really ignorant. The truth is that hip hop has become as watered down and as cheap and easy to produce as country music. So while SOME hip hop artists are among the best things going right now, the majority - especially the blog success stories - are really awful, including most of the names in this thread.

I've also noticed that a lot of contemporary hip hop is being mixed REALLY differently than it used to be. Specifically, the deep bass has been replaced by REALLY shrill treble. It's for the same porpoise, I think: the deep bass would rattle your trunk and people could hear it for blocks, but that piercing treble kind of achieves the same thing in an iPod world: it bleeds out of earbuds, and can be played on little cell phone speakers without losing most of the sound.

the ignorance comes when people talk about things they don't really know about & make preconceived judgements

That's a really interesting point. I may have learned something today.

You know what, a lot of people can make a pretty safe assumption about whether or not they're going to enjoy or appreciate a performer calling himself Lil B. I can even confidently say that I don't think there's anything worthwhile or interesting about ANY performer who has a "Lil" before his name. Those may be preconceived notions, but they're based on years of experience and pretty extensive input.

The beat on the first track isn't bad, but not terribly complex. It's the lyrics in that one that didn't inspire me. As for the second track, it appears I had skipped that one in my sampling. It's not too bad at all. I'm actually surprised it's the same guy as the rest. The last three you posted are complete garbage, though. In my humble opinion.
