Totally forgot about that until now! Good call.
Scenic World is my jam - combined with an actual sunset was just beautiful.
Never ceases to amaze me how people can come out of the same show with such polarized opinions. I'm trying to get better at not raining on someones parade. I had two friends who went to Nero over Beck and I'm happy to say thay I was able to refrain from telling them what a poor choice I thought they had made.
One of my other friends however wasn't so kind. After finding out they had missed Beck his first instinc was to say: "Talk about poor life choices" followed by awkward silence.

Best: 1. St. Vincent (Nothing else even comes close. Been going to fests for nine years and that is definitely in my top three festival sets ever. The operative word here is INTENSE. And she crowd surfed on top of me a few times.) 2. Little Dragon 3. Santigold 4. Feist 5. Beck (on here for merit of setlist alone; performance of the hits felt very flat, but nailed the Sea Change material and "Mutherfuker")
Also good: Metric, Metric (acoustic), Gary Clark Jr, Explosions in the Sky, The Joy Formidable, honeyhoney, Deer Tick (covers set), Rob Delaney, The Walkmen, Active Child
Underwhelming: Dum Dum Girls (I <3 them, but the performance never took off and sound problems never went away, so I would give them another chance), Polica, Of Monsters and Men
Rubbish: Silversun Pickups, Girl Talk, chune-yards, Tenacious D
Better than I thought would be: Childish Gambino
Better than I thought would be, but forgot about completely 5 minutes later: Pretty Lights
Most spirited performance of mediocre music: The Head and the Heart (acoustic)
Too fried on acid at the top of the hill in a post-St. Vincent state of delirium and hysteria to properly focus on but was probably very good: Jack White
Awful: Portlandia
Thank you for playing the one song I care about at exactly the right time: SBTRKT
Was probably great but I left after the first song because it was too much of a hazardous clusterfuck, especially for someone tripping balls: The Roots

You can hear her just as well when she's whispering as when she's belting out the lyrics. Sometimes I couldn't believe what I was hearing, she just sounded so good, and she's translated all of those songs live in such a dynamic way. Just awesome. |
|
And she actually rocked it. Livelier than one would expect, and I had seen her before. Really dug the reinventions of some of the older material, too.

I seriously regret missing St. Vincent to try to get closer for Jack White, and then leaving a few songs into The Roots' set because my friends had no interest in them. Next year if I'm able to go I'll stick to my game plan and break off from the group if I have to. I don't even want to know how long it'll be until I have an opportunity to see The Roots again.

My biggest regret is probably missing most of chune-yards for the Shins, whom had the most underwhelming performance all weekend I found.
However, it did present me with one of the funniest moments of the weekend as well: as the random hang-glider guy tears through behind the mainstage during the Shins' set, the crowd erupts into cheers and applause, and James Mercer takes a step back, eyes to the floor, smug smile on his face with a little nod, thinking we're going nuts for him.

That Spiritualized set was something really special for me. Lucy and I had become quote enamored with them doing lineup research with them and ending the festival watching that with her.was fucking magical.

It seems nearly unanimous on this board that Portlandia was terrible, which makes me glad since I opted for Alabama Shakes (who were incredible) instead. I caught the last three songs of The Civil Wars after that and wish they had been in a non-conflicting time slot. Adam Snacks could seriously fill 2013's lineup with the bands that I missed last weekend and it would still be amazing. Most prior years were filled with bands that I didn't care to see for the first half of each day, however 2012 was solid from start to finish.
