Bum.p

New song they wrote for a movie coming out (this week?). Way to remind me why you're one of my favorite band, guys. This is just too gorgeous...

I love Amy Ryan.

Man, Matt's voice sure has come a long way. Obviously it's always been very distinctive, but he's a good singer now. I'd seen them on the "Alligator" and "Boxer" tour and he was strugglin' big time. Their performance at Sasquatch was incredible, it was a whole 'nuther band.

Their performance at Sasquatch '08 was one of the absolute highlights of a seriously incredible weekend of music. Their performance last year felt pretty much the same, which isn't bad except it was on the mainstage instead of in the corner on the old Wookie stage so it wasn't as intimate.

High Violet didn't ring many bells for me, but I'd still go see them any opportunity I got.

I really can't agree with this more. I was listening to Alligator earlier, and as much as I love that album there are a few parts where I always think to myself, "Jesus, Matt, you sound fucking goofy right now." While I sort of miss the aggressiveness heard on songs like Abel, I think he's developed into quite a stunning singer. Even though I've seen them twice in the past year they're still one of my most anticipated acts at Coachella.

I sense conflict in this band. If they make another album, it will be their last until their reunion ten years later.

They are going in a different direction now. As I wrote in the review a couple pages back that HG apparently really liked (thanks for the props), there was only one rock song on High Violet. It's true, count them the next time you listen to the album.

They went from a rock band with mellow chunes to what is turning into a lounge band. Guitar players don't grow up playing the guitar so they can be in a lounge band. They do it rock the fuck out and get chicks. The twins lucked in celebrity status because of Matt's voice, and they are already doing stuff on the side, so the jump to, "let's rock out instead of this coma shit," will happen. And since Matt's voice is the main draw, he's going to want to be the next lead man to go solo, and triple his profit.

The band even made fun of Matt a couple times at the Seattle show we were both at for being so sensitive. Their banter in between songs is hilarious (it was never like in the past), so I know they are just giving each other shit, but there is a bit of truth behind shit talking.

Speaking of how hilarious those guys are, I went to the Portland show the next night, and Matt threw out a bunch of glow sticks in the crowd? It was really confusing, like, "What are we supposed to do with these at a National show?" As Matt was throwing them in the crowd, he said, "Here, here is four dollars worth of crap." So funny.

Brilliant. I fucking love that guy.

I see where you are coming from, but I respectfully disagree. Matt doesn't stand a chance on his own and he better know it. To me it just sounds like a band that is growing older in front of our eyes, and happened to hit it big at the exact same time that these changes are becoming more obvious. The one thing that does, however, worry me about the future of the band is Matt's possible alcoholism. The dude was WASTED at the Seattle show and everyone in attendance knew it. I've played with band members who have struggled with substance abuse on and off stage, and I always tried my best to hide their obvious issues while we were performing. I kept trying to look for subtle eye-rolls or "dude, wtf?" looks from the other band members during that show but I just really wasn't sure if they were ok with his antics or actually getting annoyed. I personally think he's an incredible drunk performer, so from my standpoint more power to him. But if that shit is leaking out behind the scenes then I definitely see an end of the road for The National sooner than later.
