 2009 Highlights
« Thread Started on May 27, 2009, 11:33am »

So many bands kicked ass this year, it's hard for me to narrow 'em down. But here goes:

1. Bon Iver - a stunning, moving, beautiful performance. See the YouTube videos if you missed it.

2. Blitzen Trapper - I'd heard how great they were live, and they didn't disappoint. The best sounding band I saw all weekend without a doubt.

3. Grizzly Bear - Love to hear those dudes sing.

4. Girl Talk - What a party.

5. Calexico - Shocked by how much I enjoyed this set. Who'd have thought Joey Burns was such a showman.

Honorable Mention: Walkmen, TV on the Radio. Fleet Foxes, and Gorgol Bordello (I only saw a few minutes of them cause of the conflict with Blitzen Trapper, but it looked incredible).

Yours?

1. Chromeo DJ set - Front and center for the entire set. It was AMAZING!

2. Grizzly Bear - They have such a presence when they play live. Then they were doing a signing at easystreet after their set.

3. M83 - Even better than I anticipated!

4. Tobbaco - Missed out on Black Moth Super Rainbow but I was able to catch Tobbaco's set which was quite the experience.

5. Tie between Champaign Champaign and Mad Rad - Both were very entertaining with Buffalo Madonna of Mad Rad scaling the stage to sing on the overhang for their final song.

So many great bands to choose from but those were my top 5 (6 really).

1. Girl Talk-Even though I watched another band after this show, this was really a great end to the festival.

2. Gogol Bordello-This was the energy boost I needed

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs-So great, that I didn't even stay for Kings of Leon

4. Avett Brothers-These guys rock, plain and simple

5. Mad Rad- Just a fun show

1. Explosions in the Sky - definitely who I was looking forward to seeing the most, and they did not disappoint.

2. Blitzen Trapper - happy they played mostly newer stuff (the stuff I'm familiar with)

3. Fleet Foxes - sounded amazing live, incredible musicians

4. Of Montreal - didn't know what to expect but their live show was definitely interesting. In a good way. And in a dancy way :)

5. Bon Iver - wasn't sure how the sound would translate live, but they pulled it off very, very well.

Other highlights: TV on the Radio, The Walkmen, Animal Collective, Viva Voce, Grizzly Bear, Doves, Devotchka, and I actually really enjoyed Jane's Addiction :)

1 - Explosions In The Sky - Religious Experience. Mind Blowing. Life Changing. One of the best sets I've ever seen in my life... Anywhere.

2. - Of Montreal - My God. It was a play. It was a dance party (I was against the gate for Natalie Portman's Shaved Head, but only stayed for two songs) which is what I craved.

3. - Fleet Foxes - Sounded just as good live as I would have hoped.

4. - The Submarines - Great set, great sound & a nice relaxed atmosphere fitting the music.

5. - Silversun Pickups - 'Lazy Eye' may have been one of my top 3 songs of the festival. Such a great 'Natural Remix'. I loved their set.

1. Explosions in the Sky - Probably the best show I will ever see.

2. Of Montreal - Played all of my favorite songs! Crazy crazy show.

3. Gogol Bordello - Not a fan of their music, but put on the most fun show I've ever been to.

4. Decemeberists - I wish they had at least played one or two old songs, but they were really good, and with the people having sex I have to put them on my list.

5. Jane's Addiction - I was surprised by how much I enjoyed their show. I was planning on leaving early that day, but I'm glad I saw them.

6. Street Sweeper Social Club

7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The band I wish I had gone to most: Monotonix. Their show looked crazy.

Its tough to put them in any sort of order so here are just five highlights.

Chromeo DJ set was amazing. The energy in the dance tent was super high and these guys rocked more than even Girl Talk.

Although, I thought Chromeo was better than Girl Talk, I thought Girl Talk put on a great show. I loved the Paranoid Android mix in and the crowd was having a great time. Especially the dude in the VIP section with the free high fives sign, who was dancing like he was the main attraction. Too funny.

Of Montreal was great. I wish they had played longer but they were able to bring alot of energy in the time that they had and a Prince cover to boot.

Jane's Addiction were quite powerful. It was my third time seeing them but my first time with Eric Avery and his brute force on the bass reminded me of why I love Janes so much. Seeing them with Eric on bass instead of Flea was so much better, and I really like Flea as a bassist.

Black Moth Super Rainbow bringing the frothy cripsy goodness at the Wookie Stage. Definitely a great day time set, although it seemed like they did not play for as long as they were scheduled.

1. M83- Wow, amazing! They'd break every song down and rebuild it until everyone was dancing in a frenzy. One of those sets where you just smiled the entire time. Very fun.

2. Explosions in the Sky- Beautiful

3. Of Montreal- How wild was that show?

4. Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band- Didn't know what to expect, and didn't love much of their recorded stuff beforehand. They were a blast, had good songs and brought a lot of energy.

5. BLK JKS- Wish they would've been able to Dr. Garbanzoure out their sound problems quicker. Very interesting and unique sound.

6. Monotonix- See #3

1. NIN - This is a band going out on top , Trent really gave it his all for this one
2. KoL- Their nearly 2 hour set was spot on
3. Gogol Bordello- So glad I left Blitzen Trapper( not that they were bad or anything) , GB was just so much fun
4. Girl Talk - Dope
5. Explosions in the Sky - Girl Talk and EitS was an awesome way to close out the festival ( I danced a few songs at Chromeo but was so burnt out I went back to camp to sleep )

Honorable Mentions - The Avett Brothers, Devotchka ,The YYYs ,Fleet Foxes( untouchable in a smaller venue)
I spent most of the weekend in the lower bowl at the Main Stage

Great show, but my friends and I cracked up in between every song because Boots said pretty much that after every song, word for word. It became a heavily used quote over the weekend with my friends and I.

Eg "Its not that they're a band band or anything....they're a social club"

1. NIN - if this is truly the last time we'll see them in the northwest, they went out with not just a bang but a fucking nuclear explosion.

2. YYYs - i was so sad that i didn't see their full set because i got sick and had to go back to the campground, but what i did see was fantastic.

3. Jane's Addiction - their set was a bit shorter than i would have liked but it definitely did not disappoint.

4. Gogol Bordello - this was one of the nice surprises of the weekend, and i'll remember it because of this adorable dream girl shaking her shit in front of me. if only i had the stones to talk to her, but i did get some pictures :)

5. Girl Talk - really closed the festival for me well

(not actually in order:)

1. Chromeo - I've seen them live and I was disappointed when I heard they'd be DJing but holy shit was I wrong. That was incredible. The hardest I've ever danced in my life, they are masters and the crowd singalongs made it all the better.

2. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest shows off their live power so much better than Yellow House. Every song was incredible. Their vocals could not have been more perfect.

3. Animal Collective - Bizzare fun is what I would call what they did. My Girls was the lowlight... which tells you how good it must have been to still make such a big impression.

4. The Wrens - I listened to them a bit and was really into it, but I had NO IDEA how intense they would be live. Killer set of really distinct and powerful indie rock.

5. DeVotchKa - I couldn't believe how fast their set went by. I don't listen to them a lot but they so great at both beautiful sad moments and catchy fun songs.

I also loved:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Crystal Castles, of Montreal, M83, Fleet Foxes and Santigold.
