I've got a soft spot for it for some reason. Zaireeka too. Zaireeka's my favorite.

Ah, turns out it is a front-to-back cover of In the Court of the Crimson King, the first King Crimson record from 1969. It's an incredible record, and my second favorite King Crimson, but it is not really a guitar record. It's kinda sorta a concept album about the end of the world, and the style is more the pastoral British prog of the late 60's that the Decemberists were fucking in the ear with Hazards of Love than the guitar-driven prog of the mid to late 70's that King Crimson is generally known for.

It's kind of weird -- I am flipping between liking and hating it every thirty seconds. They have a bunch of different bands working on different tracks, so it's totally uneven. But there are some cool textures and some interesting ideas. I can't imagine why I would ever put it on instead of the original, but if it scoops up a couple of kids that Kanye missed and gets them to check out King Crimson then I see no harm. It's certainly not terrible.

I'd rather see Wayne climb up onstage and shove Legos up his ass than see him try to take on Discipline or Larks' Tongue in Aspic. That would just be embarrassing.

This strokes me out. For whatever invalid reason, I am only familiar with the first few Crimson albums. I've been meaning to ask you again, do you remember which one we last listened to at your house? I'm abouts to tear through all that shit.

Zaireeka is fucking awesome.

Hang around long enough and you'll get the full story on my long and complicated love/hate relationship with the Flaming Lips. It comes up all the damn time. Anyway, the punchline is that Uncle Wayne's muse has summarily left him and now he is just blindly grabbing for cash and perpetrating weirdness for weirdness' sake. Doesn't make the WB albums or the first two Fridmann albums any less majestic; just makes me sad.

The first few being, what, Hear it Is and Telepathic Surgery? Understandable, although I think they're waaaay more interesting than Embryonic or At War With the Nutsacks.

If by the 'first few' you also mean In a Priest Driven Ambulance and Hit to Death in the Future Head, I advise not admitting it because I'll probably ban you out of spite.

I meant the first three. I think In a Priest Driven Ambulance was the album that got me hooked the Lips actually.

Has anybody ever actually sat down and synced all four discs of Zaireeka? I have it but I've never found a group willing to do it. I have just the stereo mixdown but I've always wanted to do it for real.

I have the four discs; I'm gonna be 'that guy' for a minute and say that I bought one of the original 2500 copies that were released in 1997. The one and only time that I managed to successfully play Zaireeka, I was home alone and I went into the rooms of three of my roommates and borrowed their jamboxes. I spent forty-five minutes lying spread-eagle on the floor hitting the play button on each of them with both of my hands and both of my feet until I finally got it right.

If you've only ever heard the stereo mix of Zaireeka, you haven't really heard Zaireeka. Hearing ten billion Waynes say [b]STUFFED ANIMAL BABY[/i] at the same time in octophonic sound is the greatest moment in the life of any Lips fan.

We were going to do this when Burrito and Nadine were down for Animal Collective week and it is one of the few things we didn't get around to. Death Grips weekend, anyone?
