 Getting Close to the stage
« Thread Started on May 1, 2012, 10:25pm »

I've never been before, and I've tried to find this info everywhere, but can someone explain the logistics of how it works once you're inside the grounds?

Lets say you want to be right in the middle of things for a headliner, how early do you have to go? If you get there 5 minutes before a headliner (or any big draw), is it ever possible to be "shutout" of getting into the mass of people between the sound booth and the stage?

Is the view brutal if you're one of the last people down there?

How busy is this area for undercard acts in the morning, is it still a zoo?

I'm sure I'll have this all Dr. Garbanzoured out after Friday, but I know some people here might have some good tips/advice.

Thanks

Have you ever read The Hunger Games? It's a lot like that.

Not too bad in the early afternoon, but if you want to be in the frontmost 'pit' area I'd recommend at least coming in during the act prior to the one you really want to see. More people exit after each act than you'd expect (although I imagine there won't be an exodus between Tenacious D and Beck, for example). To be front row center is probably an all day commitment though.

Sasquatch is really great when it comes to getting a good spot actually. For the stuff earlier in the day, there is a good chance you can walk up 5 minutes before and get relatively close. After 5-6 you're going to want to get there earlier.

The way the lower pit is set up there is an inner pit and outer pit. The inner pit is regulated by security and lets people in as space permits, the outer pit is much larger and you can just find a spot. It's almost never completely packed except at the end of the night (last 2 acts). For the first few acts of the day you'll usually be able to walk right into the inner pit without any trouble. As it gets more crowded, you're going to want to get there right before the previous act ends. When an act ends, there is usually a massive exodus that opens up a lot of space. If you're waiting to get in when this space opens up, you will most likely be let into the inner pit.

All that said, The whole venue is on a downward slope so pretty much every spot is great.

cool, thanks everyone.

Let's say I get there at 5 on Saturday and plan to stay for Childish Gambino - Metric - Shins - Jack White, do I basically have to go without hitting a beer cart/portapotty for 6-7 hours, or do you have access to these from the "inner pit"? I'm sure you have to leave for these, but I'm curious.

You have to work your way in to the inner pit. So if you plan on getting in there for the headliners, you should probably plan on staying from the subheadliner onwards.

Once you exit the pit, you're out and have to gain access again. No potty breaks, food, water or beer.

Okay, for reference (these are from 2010):

1. Here is how close I got to Broken Social Scene, having arrived near the end of the previous set: http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1....3_5247263_n.jpg
2. Having moved up between sets, here is how close I got to Broken Social Scene: http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1....3_1893693_n.jpg
3. Here is a side view of the main stage for the sub-headliner that evening, "Vampire Weekend" : http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-a....3_2830336_n.jpg
4. Here is a view of the Gorge out towards who knows because holy fuck y'all: http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-a....8_7613241_n.jpg

In all seriousness Teej, you can usually get into the inner pit after 20 minutes of the headliner starting. The looky lous usually start filing out at that point. A good idea would be to shoot for a close spot in the outer pit and then mosey over to the inner pit entrance. Most of the time nobody even realizes they are letting people into the inner pit when the show's in full force.

I really made it top priority to get as close to The Flaming Lips as possible in 2008 and stood through the previous two sets. I wound up roughly four back from the front.

k cool. thanks again.

I'm just gonna go with the flow and let it all work itself out. The only act that I'll probably plan ahead for is Jack White.
