Purity Ring is pretty cool live. I can't say I was totally in love with their performance when I saw them, but they were very interesting to say the least.

There are some parts of Portlandia that are funny but for the most part it is cheap shots and kind of lazy in my opinion. I guess since I live in Portland and I adore where I live I have a different outlook and some defensiveness. But I am really surprised how many people are so fucking excited to see them.

Ahh, that makes sense. I've only seen like 2 minutes of the show, so I don't really know what all the hype is about.

It's really not very clever if you've spent any significant time in Portland. Stormy's right -- it's pretty much all just cheap shots at the people of this city. I guess it's kind of funny conceptually, but watching Fred Armisen put on a stupid wig and stick his teeth out and pretend to be a lesbian bookstore owner isn't that much more amusing (to me) than actually spending those five minutes in a lesbian bookstore.
Also, once you've seen as many asshole cyclists and militant organic food nuts as I have, and once you've spent a couple hours inside a bar that is completely overrun with the adult dodge ball team after a practice... It doesn't matter how much they exaggerate those characters (HINT: it's not a lot), it's just tedious to watch.
Overall, it's just mean-spirited and kind of offensive considering neither of them are actually from Portland. And then you consider its contribution to the fucked up economy of this city -- I bet the statistics of people who moved here from California or Utah or wherever to 'Live the Dream of the 90's' and then found out there are literally no fucking jobs here are pretty surprising.

So, having never watched the show, I can see how being from the place they are essentially making fun of would make it less entertaining. I gather it just pokes fun a stereotypes about hipsters and such. That being said, I've never been to Portland so maybe I will check out a few episodes and maybe I will like it.
I have to ask though, what exactly is a lesbian bookstore? Is it just a regular bookstore run by lesbians, or does it have literature that specifically appeals to lesbians?
