I could have worded that better... What I meant by 'worth it' was if carrying a bulky and delicate device around all day would be troublesome. If protecting it simply entails some padding in backpack, then it sounds worth it to me.

Depends on what you want to do. I often struggle with this on vacations, and as a general rule, what I've found is:

- When I'm doing a road trip, hiking, etc. the DSLR gets used all the time.
- For events like rodeos, festivals, etc. I'd rather not bother with it and settle for a point and shoot.

I've done events with a DSLR before, and for me at least it changes my enjoyment of the event, so I no longer do it as a rule. Your mileage may vary.

Good point. The DSLR is probably better suited for a hillside set like Bon Iver. I'll need to get myself a flip minicam for Pretty Lights

Im going to be filming on my dslr but as you can see in the video below its kind of a pain in the ass to film and throw glowsticks. I have used a Kodak zi8 with an external microphone for all of my sasquatch filming and it has worked great, sadly I sold it though.

Having a GoPro strapped to my dome would of been the way to go.

Speaking of, I think I am going to buy one for sasquatch.

I actually had my contour HD with me at Sasquatch, but was a little leery about bringing it in to the festival given that I knew I was likely going to get intoxicated every day and therefore was reasonably likely to break / lose it.

Unless you regularly lose or break things while intoxicated it really isnt much of a concern for the DSLR. If you have a backpack and don't want to take any pictures, just put it in there. If you are on the hill or wandering around and want to snap a couple photos, wear it around your neck. It's not like you're going to get super fucked up and just throw it down the hill. The only real concern would be leaving it on the hill or somewhere else after sitting down.

Easy solution: find one of those retractable ID badge holders and attach it to your belt loop. It makes it so you can still take all the pictures you want, but if you put it on the ground or drop it, it stays attached to you.

The only time my camera has been remotly close to getting broken was when I was in the front for Crystal Castles in 09, that shit was fucking rowdy. After having it bounce of the rail a few times I decided I should probably move back into the crowd to avoid further damage, camera was fine, just be smart about it.
