Because like it or not he's become one of the most relevent recording artists on earth over the past year. 12 months ago he opened for deadmau5 in front of about 100 people just standing around with no idea who he was. Last week he sold out a 7000 capacity venue in the same city. I think that's why people are still talking about him. |

Since we are talking about Skrillex in this context, I'm going to have to disagree, or claim ignorance. I was under the impression it was the other way around for him, that he didn't start toting around an expensive light show until after he got huge.
And what a cool light show it was. It was based on the geometric shape, the sextagon, and it was one of the cooler light shows I've seen (maybe just because of the Geometry). And this coming from one of the few in attendance not high on drugs. I suppose actual math equations would have blown my mind, but it was still impressive.

HG, I think what you're saying is close to true but even at last years sasquatch when he was just pressing play on a macbook people were going apeshit for him. The new light show definitely made his audience grow exponentially but I also know way too many people who think his music is sick

Yeah I gotta agree with know and cbats. While the light show might make more people come to his live show, it certainly isn't the main reason for his popularity. Light shows are a huge part of EDM shows but if people don't like the music they still won't go.l

Yes, this is true. His tour was already sold out and he was adding additional dates before he even debuted his visual display. I didn't even know he was touring with that thing until the week of his show.

The main reason I like EDM is because I like to get lost in music and just go crazy. I'm the person that you see on the freeway going apeshit to Bassnectar/Pretty Lights/etc and head-butting my steering wheel. I'm sure it could be considered some mental illness but whatever. The reason I like going to EDM shows is because I'm surrounded by hundreds of other like minded people wanting to rage and to just have a good time listening to music. Connecting with all those people at once is a powerful experience (unless it's with etarded 16 year olds) and I love that feeling.
Half the time I'm at these shows my eyes are closed and i'm just dancing and feeding off the energy from everyone else (sober or not) so the light shows are just a plus. The over-the-top light shows that are in abundance as of recently though are pretty cool whether you like the music or not, you have to admit. However, the best is when the artist/producer/dj feeds off the crowd and delivers a high-energy set and has top-notch mixing and keeps everyone on their toes.
I can see why people either don't understand EDM or think it's stupid. That's why I don't care if people hate edm, it's not for everybody...especially pretentious music snobs.

| I never said the music I like is better than the music everyone else likes, so I don't know where you are going with that statement. I like all forms of music, I was just explaining why I like edm.
