Top 5, Bottom 3 « Thread Started on May 6, 2008, 1:55pm »
To help pass the time before the fest FINALLY starts, give me the top 5 artists you're most excited to see, and 3 you could care less about. Should lead to some fun debate and discussion.
5 I can't wait to see:
The National New Pornographers Steve Malkmus and the Jicks Fleet Foxes Flight of the Conchords

Hmm tough to pick only 5...
Top 5 1. Flaming Lips 2. The National 3. Okkervil River (surprised no one has mentioned them yet!) 4. Flight of the Conchords 5. Yeasayer (recently fell in love w/ them)
Honourable mention: Beirut, The Kooks (although very disappointed in their new album), REM, Built to Spill, The Cure
Terrible Trio 1. OZOMATLI (will be 7 people watching that set) 2. Newton Faulkner (supposedly like Jack Johnson with dreads?!?) 3. Dyme Def (let's be honest here...)

Sorta surprised to see so much Ozomatli hate. I have seen them twice, and the second time was ho hum, since they basically play the same show. And as one website stated, "we get it, you play in the crowd, enough." That being said, they are a very unique band, composed of mexicans, blacks, white dudes, and even an asian. Their music is fun, and I would not suggest anyone who has not seen them live to skip them.
Top 5:
Flaming Lips (a can't miss) Mars Volta (because I have never seen them) Flight of the Conchords (because they almost never play live at festivals, so it will be interesting to see what they do. I agree though, they might suck) Rodrigo Y Gabriela (again, I have not seen them, the only reason, amazing guitar players) The Cure
To extend it, I would never buy a ticket to REM, but why not see them, since they are basically legends.
I also have read mixed reviews about Fleet Foxes. I enjoyed them recently at a small venue, kinda like Grizzly Bear, mellow, but catchy. Too early for me to see though, I will still be partying at the campground. Franti is another I will be at, again because I have not seen him/them. And they seemed to be rocking the stage after the Beastie Boys last year. At least that was the reason the exiting took an hour.
Bottom 3: Breeders (sure they never play live, but I don't really like them either) Death Cab (bored when I saw them live) New Pornos/Hives (there must be a lot of Canadians posting here)
Yeasayer is awesome as well, but again too early. I will really try to see them though.

Oh and to get the shit stirring. You're list sucks.
Excellent. Now where's yours so I can rip on it?
I'm glad to see people agreeing with me on Ozomatli. I saw them on the mainstage last year and thought "what are they doing at Sasquatch?" Just struck me as run-of-the-mill rock / rap combo that was cool 10 years ago. And all the dumb jumping around and loud banter just didn't work, IMO.
And Tom, I'd say that if you like Ghostland Observatory, it's no surprise that you don't like Fleet Foxes. They could hardly be more different.

Top 5
1)R.E.M (My must see headliner) 2)The Breeders (My 'Old School' music for the weekend) 3)The Presidents of the United States of America (Fucking Peaches!) 4)Cold War Kids (See what last years Hype was all about) 5)Ghostland Observatory (Last years set blew my mind)
Bottom 3 1) Ozomatli (Last year was terrible, and I stay ed for most of it? Why?) 2) Micheal Franti & Spearhead (Go back to playing Shambala already! Oh and if you skipped the Beastie Boys for this guy last year you're DUMB!) 3)The Comedy Tent (I thought there was going to be at least one huge name? They should put Flight of the Concords headlining the Tent on Sunday and replace them with Ryan Adams and the Cardinals on the mainstage.)
Flight of the Conchords (because they almost never play live at festivals, so it will be interesting to see what they do. I agree though, they might suck)
New Pornos/Hives (there must be a lot of Canadians posting here)
Yeasayer is awesome as well, but again too early. I will really try to see them though.
To be totally honest when the lineup first came out I was probably most excited about Flight of the Conchords (Iam quite ashamed to say, because I love Sasquatch #1 for the music). I love the HBO special and thought they would be great to see live. But now listening to the new album I really don't like the polished sound of it and their attempted instrumentation. FOTC is all about the improv, quirkiness, and their hilarious singing style. I hope they bring something unexpected rather than just singing the songs as they are on the album or else it could be very disappointing.
What do the Hives have to do with Canadians? Even New Pornos for that matter...I don't think they are any more popular here than in the States.
See Yeasayer. There will be time to party during Ozomatli!
