I only caught bits and pieces of the game. I saw a few bullshit holding calls and it sounded like there may have been an instance of the dreaded "tuck rule". Outside of that I didn't see much. It was pretty boring until the end of the game.

There were a lot of questionable calls, all of them against the Chiefs. The announcer summed if up at one point with "that call...that was a bad call...I don't agree with that call at all..." in the most depressed voice. The drive that put the Steelers ahead with a few minutes left in regulation (the chiefs were able to tie it afterwards) was kept alive by at least 4 questionable calls.

Although not technically a bad call, the worst call of the night was the team celebration penalty on a TD that didn't count. I don't understand how you can be penalized for celebrating a TD that wasn't a TD. Really sick and tired of the celebration penalty. It's a game for crying out loud. Let the grown men play!
The NFL is a total circus! I find it humorous that there is no longer emphasis on discussing the awful job of the zebras. In retrospect the replacement refs weren't that bad.

Not every bad call went against the Chiefs. The first bad call of the night was a phantom holding call against Pittsburgh that negated a 7 yard gain on first down. The announcers never questioned the call, and they never showed a reply, but I re-watched the play 12 times, and there was no holding on the guy they called it on, or any other player. Then they added a 15 yard penalty on top of the bad holding call for "cursing an official." That rule is new to me, and should have been used every other down when the replacements were around. Pittsburgh went from 2nd & 3 at the 30 yard line to 1st & 29 at their 5. The next play was a fumble and the Chiefs had first and goal. I know the refs didn't cause the fumble, but that holding call (plus ref curse) had a huge impact on the game.
There was a holding call on the Chiefs which negated a TD. It wasn't an obvious hold, it didn't have to be called, but it was by definition a hold. The crowd sure didn't like it.
Agreed with Chud, the most unfortunate call was when the Steelers QB clearly threw an incomplete pass on third down, but the refs let the Chiefs pick up the ball and return it for a TD. Then they got a 15 yard team celebration penalty. After reviewing the play, it was obvious it was an incomplete pass, so they reversed the TD, and the Steelers got a first down because of the team celebration penalty. It was really bad the call on the field wasn't initially an incomplete pass, but that's really the Chiefs fault for the group celebration.
By the way, what even constitutes a group celebration? I thought it was more than one person, yet I saw two Chiefs lineman doing a choreographed dance after sacking the QB which included them dancing and kicking each others feet. That's not a group celebration?
There were a few questionable calls near the end of the game, but nothing I thought was too horrid. This game wasn't the reason I mentioned the refs being so shitty lately, it seems to be happening in every game I've watched the last two weeks.

I hate the celebration rule. The celebrations are one of the few things the CFL has over the NFL. Some of them are down right brilliant.

Did anyone think this was a good call? I know I'm biased because I'm a Steelers fan, but this was one of the many calls made by regular officials that really irritated me. An empty hand moving forward has always been the definition of a fumble, so I don't get why it was ruled a fumble. He clearly had the ball gripped after the initial contact. I think it was more more of a terrible call than most because it gave the Giants a TD when the Steelers were driving. A potential 14 point swing makes it extra shitty. Plus, they reviewed it, and confirmed their really bad call. Can anyone defend this?

There is no rhyme or reason to any call that does or does not get overturned by officials, be they replacement or official (is this what you call them? official officials?). The amount of bad calls resulting from replay is down right humiliating IMHO.

Obviously Pittsburgh have a big history in the NFL, but the overwhelming majority of their fans are from Pittsburgh/ surrounding townships. I can't imagine they have that many fans from the Oregon/Washington area, when so many other teams are much closer. What brought you to root for the 'Stillers' (as the Yinzers say in Pixburgh)?

You probably understand this having grown up on an island, was there a local team there? When I was a youngster, I liked the Steelers colors. Plain and simple. It wasn't like they were a power house in the late 80s when I started following them, so the bandwagon claim won't work. I get it all the time though, like I'm not allowed to have a favorite team because I didn't grow up near an NFL city.
And the biased comment was a freebie because maybe only Steelers fans think that call was terrible? When it comes to judging the competency of officials, I never claim they are one sided.

Yeah, again I just curious about how a person from the west coast becomes a fan of Pittsburgh. Your explanation makes perfect sense - my love for Braves started in somewhat similar fashion. The first baseball game I saw on television had the Braves in their powder blue playing against the Padres in some drab color. Dale Murphy hit a homerun, they still lost by like 7 runs. But whatever - Braves forever became my team... and the primary reason I would ultimately move to Atlanta.
As for any local American football teams in Bermuda?...sadly, no. We do have local football (soccer), cricket and basketball teams there - and a national rugby team.
To be honest, I'm not sure most Bermudians even knew the NFL existed until the late 70s - when satellites became available and people started being able to receive American signals.
In terms of viewership, the sport is growing in popularity - but as far as playing is concerned... the other football reigns supreme.

If you missed the end of the Steelers v. Browns game, and I'm sure you all did, the Browns had the ball at about the 50 with about 2:20 left in the game up by 6. On first down, they fumbled the ball, Pittsburgh recovered, but the refs never saw the fumble. They awarded the ball to the Browns. After the two minute warning, they ran off another 100 seconds, and the Steelers got the ball back with 15 seconds left on their own five.
Again, I'm not claiming ref favoritisms, the Steelers more than deserved to lose that game (7 turnovers?), but that was a huge missed call which wasn't even close (the guy who fumbled the ball was still upright, so there was no "maybe he was down" argument). Even with the Steelers third string QB slinging, down 6 with 2:20 left at the 50 is a bit easier than down 6 with 15 seconds left on your own five.
