such a good hit. It's going to really sad when Tate gets fined for that because apparently hitting someone in their chest is blindsiding them(???)

I think sticking his helmet right under the chin of somebody looking the other way is what constitutes it as a cheap shot rather than the positioning of their bodies but meh.

These fucking replacement refs are terrible. In every game. The Ravens/Eagles game was a damn good game, but would have been a lot better for BOTH teams if the refs knew how to do things such as spot the ball using the chains and the difference between Illegal Contact and Pass Interference to name a few. By the time that game ended, most of the 4pm est games were just about finished with the 1st quarter because the refs took so much fucking time with their thumbs up their asses in the middle of the field, trying to Dr. Garbanzoure out where the ball should be after a 10 yard penalty.

Another successful week for the replacement refs. I'll agree with Dr. Garbanzo the only criticism I have is they do take a long time to make their calls, but otherwise they are getting most of the calls right. They still haven't made a bad call to cost a team a game, even though Bob Costas disagrees. He said something along the lines of, "now the replacement refs are costing teams games because of their bad calls, like in the Baltimore game." Then they cut to Joe Flacco bitching about how bad the refs are. They never even showed the "bad call" in question. That Vick incomplete pass was absolutely the correct call, and it did cost the Ravens the game. All this replacement criticism is still based on the myth that the regular refs are actually good.

The NFL replacement refs are lightyears ahead of MLS' regular refs. If you want to see some mind-fucking-bogglingly bad calls, just watch one of those matches.

That Monday night game was painful as hell to watch. I still disagree with you on the refs. They haven't made a glaring game changing call yet, but it's coming. With the regular refs, they'll some calls wrong, but these refs have been making a lot of head shaking decisions (particularly with pass interference plays), and they're taking way too long to do it.

And yes I know my argument is moot because you beat me last week.

To add to your point, I do think it's been painful to watch at points. I'm not trying to convince youz there is a conspiracy here, but the most painful part has been watching the players and coaches act like they are entitled to argue with the refs because they are replacements. That MNF fumble at the end of the first quarter, there were coaches running on the field, and the end result was a 15 minute delay while everyone bitched. Was there even a bad call made? That is not acceptable. If the NFL wants to give the replacements a chance, they need to immediately start fining, penalizing, or ejecting players and coaches for arguing calls. They do it in the NBA and MLB.

NFL refs suck regardless of if they are replacements or regulars. The only difference here is that everyone (including the media) can't stop talking about how terrible the replacements are. 95% of the plays, the refs aren't even questioned.

Do me a favor Shax et al. Pretend your brother, or friend, or uncle, or neighbor is an armature football official, and is given the difficult position of being a replacement NFL ref. Be optimistic, ignore everything you've heard about how they are the most terrible people alive. Watch a game from their point of view, and tell me they are doing an injustice to the sport. Then maybe you'll understand my point of view.

It's like trying to convince a bunch of Killers fans that Animal Collective is good.

I agree that it's being blown out of proportion by the media, but they're still doing a pretty bad job. It's not even their fault though. The NFL is the top of the food chain. The best refs are locked out. The SECOND best refs are in college and university. These guys are 3rd string scrubs who referee as a hobby. These guys are not used to the speed of the NFL. They are not used to the rules of the NFL.

I'm not mad at the refs per se, I'm mad at the situation.

I'm with Shax on this one. It's not that the refs are horrible people or anything (although they are scabs...), it's that they've been thrown into an impossible situation. That said, they are failing at controlling the games and adding about 30 minutes to each game. Wonk, the Broncos/Falcons play you mentioned was absolutely horrible. The refs needed to take control of the situation and eject at least one player, probably more. They can't let the players push them around like that. Furthermore, they didn't even review the play like they were supposed to. The replay clearly showed Denver controlled the ball but the refs got so thrown off by the scuffle that they didn't overturn the play.

I can't say that I know the details of what each side is asking but the NFL clearly needs to do something to reach an agreement. Obviously they're not going to cave to all of their demands but they need to give them something. With how much money there is flowing through the league right now, they could stand to back down a bit and make SOME concessions to the refs.
