I wish I had time for books but I can barely get through my class courseware. The last thing I read cover to cover was a collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald short stories. I had started reading "A Confederacy of Dunces" but then I lost it. I think it may be under my bed.

I have one book that I always highly recommend. "A Circus of the Earth and the Air" by Brooke Stevens. This is a book that everyone should read (in my opinion). Its a dark and mysterious story that will leave you thinking "what the fuck happened" when you get to the last sentence. READ IT. If you only take one of my posts seriously on this board then this is the one to take seriously.

'The Circus of the Earth and the Air' is an amazing book. I loved it so much that when I was done with it, I tracked down Brooke Stevens' email address and got in touch; I told him the book had meant a lot to me and asked if he would mind if I shipped my copy to him and have him sign it. He did, and sent it back to me with a signed copy of his second book, 'Tattoo Girl', as well.

I had a collectible can of Pepsi from Star Wars Episode I, with Watto the junk dealer or whatever on it, sitting on top of my bookcase. Years ago. It was unopened, but somehow gross pepsi resin seeped out and ruined my copy of The Circus of the Earth and the Air. It sucked.

Great book though. High five, switch.

What did you think of Tattoo girl? I didn't think it was nearly as good but it still had that mysterious creepy feel to it. I'd give it a B+

Honestly I never made it through Tattoo Girl. He seemed to be aiming for more of an Oprah's Book Club vibe with the stuff he did after his first book.

For some reason I've always liked long series, and in that vein, I just finished The Dark Tower for the second time, and I'm currently reading the most recent book in the Wheel of Time series, Towers of Midnight.

Favorite series definitely is taken by Hyperion, however. Dan Simmons knows how to write him some epic sci fi.

I read the first book of Hyperion and enjoyed it but never picked up the rest. Should I?

And did you know there's a movie and TV series of Dark Tower in the works?

Yep. Pretty much the first thing I check the internet for every morning is news on the adaptation. And lately all its been doing is pissing me off, because apparently they are talking about JENNIFER FUCKING CARPENTER to play Susannah... A character who's race defines A lot about her. If they get this white actress to play a decidely black character, I'm probably going to have to boycott. And if you liked Hyperion, you should absofuckinglutely pick up the rest. Also, if you're into the Iliad at all, Ilium and Olympos are also amazing reads. Same author.

You do realize that fucking Ron Howard is making The Dark Tower adaptation, right? He is going to get it 100% wrong, like he does with almost everything he touches. It's going to be poorly cast across the board and then cut to ribbons to fit into the miniseries format.

It's going to be a disaster.

That would be...unspeakable. Would she have a southern white trash alter ego? Ridiculous. Ron Howard can't be trusted. I'm worried. Is there a good reliable website/twitter feed with info about the adaptation?

The only hope is that King is an executive producer, so he might be able to keep some shit in line. But he's not very trustworthy with his own material most of the time, so that's probably not a good point.

I'm trying to be optimistic! I really am. But you're right. I wish they could find someone with an actual passion for the source material. JJ Abrams was originally set to do it, but he said he didn't think he could do it justice. I really really wish Edgar Wright and Michael Bacall would do it, as the adaptation they did of Scott Pilgrim is possibly the best adaptation I've ever seen, aside from possibly Dr. Garbanzoht Club and The Shawshank Redemption. I haven't seen anything Ron Howard has been involved with other than AD for years, so I guess that is part of my optimism, but... I don't know. Someone made an interesting point on the IGN boards, that the Dark Tower series is uniquely in a position that allows for leeway due to the "parallel worlds" and I thought that was an interesting point. Its more than two years away at minimum, though. A lot remains to be seen. I'd really like to see a bit bulkier JGL get the role of Eddie, I think he could do a really great job in that role.

IGN is usually pretty up to date on it. They've offered the role of Roland to Javier Bardem. The only problem I have with that is that he's proven unable to not sound spanish, and that is a big issue.

:sigh: Its probably going to be a pile. But if they get the (spoiler, i guess) massacre in Tull right in the first movie, that would make it worth watching. That shit would be a-maze-ing.

They've optioned all my favorite fantasy series for movies or tv series at this point, and I don't think any of them will be made/made right excepting possible Game of Thrones. They've optioned The Wheel of Time, and Mistborn, and even Malazan. Everyone wants to achieve LOTR-level success and it's just going to be a shitshow of crappy fantasy movies based on awesome source material.

No one's going to be able to even come close to doing WoT justice.. Not without like, 20 movies. Although there is more fat to be cut from it than probably any other series... Heck, you wouldn't even have to make a Crossroads of Twilight movie, just tack on the two important plot points in that book to the one before it!
