Let's Talk Books, Fuckers! « Reply #270 on Jun 2, 2012, 9:52pm via the ProBoards Mobile App »
I will I will! Thanks guys! I love reading so much but I had to stop because it took over my life for a bit. I hope I have a bit more self control now.
Haha, I just downloaded the Game of Thrones to read today. I might regret that one. American Gods turned into like 2 million pages on my phone so I can only imagine how long that book's gonna end up being.
Every copy of American Gods is roughly 1500 pages too long.
Anyway, this is precisely what I wrote my entrance essay on in order to get into university and that was my main argument: that reading online or through ebooks will never completely replace traditional books because they lack the physical connections of smell and touch. And now look at me: it's been 2 years of reading on iBooks only.

Paper books will probably always exist as a novelty and as a preference for hardcore users, like film and LPs, but I think that 99% of books will be read electronically within our lives, which is fine by me. Like I said, I'm all about new shit.

My only issues are that about half of what I read isn't available digitally, and digital books have no pass-along value. You can't borrow one (technically you can now, but it doesn't really count), you can't get them from a library (again, technically you can but only kind of and in some places), and you they have no physical home. Bookstores and libraries are some of the coolest places. I host receptions for prospective students at bookstores all the time. Reading is great, but that's only about half of what physical books are good for.
So I guess that is a big issue, now that I write about it. Fuck digital books.

I like reading digitally for my "on-the-go" lifestyle 'cause no matter where I am I'll always have my phone on me, meaning I always have a couple books with me as well. Also, I'm one those readers that needs to be reading 3 books at once, so it's a lot easier just having everything in my phone/iPad. However, whenever anyone asks me what the last book I read was, I always draw a blank on everything electronic and can only think of the last physical book I read (which is very unfortunate because it was a gossip girl "novel").
Oh and, the screen issue doesn't bother me at all, I can read on it for quite a while, but I think reading on electronic devices has increased my ADD tendencies. With a paper book, I could sit for hours reading, but with a screen I find I start thinking about checking email or playing a game after about an hour tops.

I realized tonight that I was regarding my phone suspiciously because I'm reading a sci-fi book where quantum computer-based AI's commit acts of terrorism.
And yes, this is the sci-fi book I'm reading at Barnes and Noble because it's too expensive to buy and it's not at the library.
