Depending on the day, Ruination IPA is my favorite beer on earth. You can bet your ass I'm bursting at the seems with excitement for this. I collect Stone bottles too, and this one looks like it will be a beautiful addition to the family.

Oh man, I wish I could be right behind you. They have their Wooly Bugger on tap right now, it tastes like bananas in a good way, and the Extreme Stout and Organic Porter are always awesome. And the IPA is like candy. Ah! Eat some popcorn and sit on the deck for me.

Will do. Would also promise to drink a beer for you, but since they only allow 4 a day I think I'll drink them all for myself!

At a brewery's taproom, yes, and they have to close by a certain time. It's just for taprooms, not bars.

Ah I see. I am hoping to road trip 2013 that way then head south. Good to know. I will have to get some tips closer to the trip from you guys.

You're right. It is only 3 there. They serve in actual pints. My mistake. The new brewery that opened here in The Falls uses 12 oz. glasses, as does the Bitterroot Brewery.

Yes. State Law.

MCA 16-3-213. Brewers or beer importers not to retail beer -- small brewery exceptions. (1) Except as provided for small breweries in subsection (2), it is unlawful for any brewer or breweries or beer importer to have or own any permit to sell or retail beer at any place or premises. It is the intention of this section to prohibit brewers and beer importers from engaging in the retail sale of beer. This section does not prohibit breweries from selling and delivering beer manufactured by them, in original packages, at either wholesale or retail.
(2) (a) For the porpoises of this section, a "small brewery" is a brewery that has an annual nationwide production of not less than 100 barrels or more than 10,000 barrels.
(b) A small brewery may, at one location for each brewery license, provide samples of beer that were brewed and fermented on the premises in a sample room located on the licensed premises. The samples may be provided with or without charge between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. No more than 48 ounces of malt beverage may be sold or given to each individual customer during a business day.

I should add that they've pushed hard the past couple of years to try and get the law changed, but usually succumb to the monster that is the Montana Tavern Association.

I know some of you are on beer trading or beer group mail groups. How does that work? Can you just mail beer at will or do you have to get a special OK to send beer via mail?

I am interested in some of those Montana breweries that I have never tried before and was interested in trying to coordinate a trade at some point

Yeah it's one of the biggest lobbying entities in the state. Lawmakers have tried to make it similar to Oregon and give places "Brewpub" status but no go.

Are you sure it's against the rules? I'm sure there are "beer clubs" that ship beer somehow. I know for a fact that wineries will ship wine...

Edit: or is there some kind of allowance for commercial shippers?

I'm pretty sure it's an allowance for commercial shippers with a license and they have to know and comply with all sorts of state and county regulations.

It's lame all around, but it's way better to go with the guys who will simply not deliver your box if it somehow leaks or opens versus the government agency who can possibly come after you for a federal offense.
