I hate the Academy with a fiery passion and almost always disagree with the winners. But I will say that, for once, I agree with the majority of the nominations.

Pretty shocked about Bigelow not getting a best director nod. Haven't seen Zero Dark Thirty yet (so excited!), but by all accounts she should have been in there easily. I'm disappointed Tarantino didn't get nominated either.
Other than that, I think the nominations this year are pretty spot on.

I know Best Actor will go to Day-Lewis, and he deserves it, but I'd like to see Joaquin Phoenix win. He was absolutely stunning as a self-destructing WWII vet in The Master.

If anyone ever had a chance of beating out Daniel Day-Lewis, it's Joaquin Phoenix in The Master. I haven't seen Lincoln yet, and Day-Lewis takes it home literally every time he is nominated, but Phoenix in The Master is as great a performance as I have ever seen. Ever. Consider that Day-Lewis won less than five years ago for There Will Be Blood, and I'd say Phoenix has a chance.
I will cry tears of rage if Joaquin Phoenix doesn't win, just like I did when Julia Roberts beat out Ellen Burstyn's performance in Requiem for a Dream for her role in Erin Brockovich (absolute bullshit).

If Joaquin Phoenix doesn't win then... well I don't know what. I have rarely seen such a full and complete character. He was totally that broken down man. It was incredible.

Lincoln was great and everything but Day-Lewis being great in it was such a forgone conclusion that I was a bit disappointed. The whole performance was just a bit too perfect and didn't do a whole lot for me. I thought the movie was successful because of just about every other part of the movie instead. In contrast, Phoenix completely dominates the Master, a movie I'm still not completely sure I understand. It's a pretty clear choice for me.
More than anything I'm just thrilled to see Haneke nominated for best director.

This.
Also, has anyone else seen Kill List? Loved it. Pretty gruesome, but definitely engaging.

Oh, I also forgot to mention It's Such A Beautiful Day! I found out about these films from HG (good recommendation, man!) a few years ago and fell completely in love with them. Don Hertzfeldt edited them all together to make a feature length film. If you've never seen his work or any of the "Bill" series YOU MUST WATCH IT!!

Just saw Lincoln. I thought it was good, not great. And call me crazy but I couldn't get over how similar DDL's Abe Lincoln voice was to Ben Stiller's Zoolander voice.

I saw it at the fim festival a few years back (2, I think?). Absolutely loved it even though it's one of those films that you can't help but burst out with laughter when it's over 'cause you're really not too sure what you just finished watching. I really really liked the same director's film from the year before about a family of thugs who get pulled back in for one last job-- totally can't remember the name, something with a street in it maybe or a british address? Somebody IMDB it....

Eh, since I'm not completely lazy and know how to use the google myself I Dr. Garbanzoured out the movie name: Down Terrace. Highly recommend if you enjoyed Kill List, FD. It has a bit more of a stage play feel to it, and while the violence level is fairly similar, this one is definitely way more about the dialogue over visuals.

Thanks. I 'll try and hunt that one down.
Here's a neat possible Kill List explanation. It's pretty well thought out and fun to read. The movie and the "secrets" within it really reminded me of Micheal Haneke's films.
Check it out!
