This.
It seemed like it was made from a book and they tried to squish too much into the movie and because of that they left a bunch of holes everywhere.
I thought the first half was pretty great, then it just got stupid. Still pretty visually cool though.

I'm actually really looking forward to Oblivion too, in spite of Tom Cruise. Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but don't forget Minority Report and the surprisingly beautifully shot War of the Worlds.

How do you remember movies again? All I could initially come up with was "The Muppets" which I'm pretty sure came out last year and was probably on my last year's list.
I need to cut back on all the candies and the lucy in the sky with diamonds and the extinct ding dongs.

I read somewhere that in the rough drafts of the script, Prometheus was completely disconnected from the Alien franchise, just a one-off side project Ridley had been working on. Then someone told him if he made it an Alien prequel he'd get a shitload of money. They weren't wrong, but ugh...

I broke, for the absolute last time, my vow to never rent from Redbox and brought home Dark Shadows and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close over the weekend. Both DVDs were scratched past the point of playability.
We got forty minutes or so into Dark Shadows; it was definitely more interesting than anything I've seen from Tim Burton in the last five years, at least. I mean, I guess it's basically the same film as the first Addams Family movie, but still I was pretty frustrated to have to turn it off. I'll get around to finishing it one of these days.
I make a point of not watching films about 9/11, but Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is based on a book that I love very much, by one of my favorite novelists. Jonathan Safran Foer's first novel, Everything is Illuminated, was my drop-your-ham-sandwich-and-pray FAVORITE BOOK for over a decade, but it was subjected to one of the most miserable film adaptations of all time. COMPLETELY missed the point. But Extremely Loud ended up being really, really good.
Seeing images from the terrorist attacks inevitably causes deep, dreadful emotions, and generally I think that employing them as a plot device is cheap and manipulative. They were definitely present in this film, but the emotional tone of Extremely Loud was such that I never felt like I was being intentionally jerked around. That's not to say that watching it didn't put me through the wringer, because it did. Bad. But it felt respectful and accurate. I loved it.
We got halfway through it before the DVD took a shit and I was fucking pissed. I tried to rent it from Amazon, but it wasn't available there. Fortunately I found a site where I could stream it without even having to look too hard, and without having to wait a million years for it to buffer.

Did anybody make it to see Cloud Atlas? After seeing it once it is kind of hard to state my full opinion of it. There was a lot going on back and forth. It was interesting for the most part, but there was also a lot of extra stuff in there that I think would have been better off left out. It was a lengthy movie. It was funny to see the characters switching roles throughout the movie. Tom Hanks played some odd ball characters with a lot of makeup, so I didn't even catch it was him right off.

I saw The Hobbit last night. I was able to watch it on one of the screens that supported the higher frame rate and 3D. Immediately we all felt that it looked way too clear and more like a behind the scenes documentary than a movie. I was worried that the "movie magic" was gone and it almost felt more like watching a play. It probably took about a half hour to adjust to how ridiculously clear the picture was, but once I did and more of the FX and landscape was revealed I was in fucking awe! The CGI is off the fucking chain and doesn't pixelate or chop for a second under the scrutiny of the 10045778p (or what ever) frame rate.
The orcs look like Peter Jackson actually found real live orcs who could act (or perhaps taught them to act. Right?) and then filmed them interacting with humans (or well, sorta humans. Dwarves, Hobbits, Wizards...). I loved it. The scenery is absolutely stunning once you adjust to the high frame rate.
Anyone else see the high frame rate 3D version?

Oh you know I saw the high frame rate 3D. I would have preferred no 3D, but that isn't an option for the high frame rate. It took me a while to warm up as well, and I don't know if I completely got there, but I got comfortable enough and could appreciate it at least. I kept thinking to myself, "is this what I want all movies to look like in the future?" and the answer is yes. It's just more real, straight up. The best thing it does is allows your eyes to track very fast movements during action sequences, something you can't do at 24fps. You don't miss a thing.
The movie itself? Alright!

I felt like this after I saw it, now it's been a month and a half and I'm like, whatever, that sucked. Bombastic piece of shit, really.

We started to watch it and Maegan hated it so much we switched theaters to one with the regular framerate. I might try it again with a friend. I don't know though, I found it almost too real to the point of looking fake, if that makes sense.

This is exactly how I felt for the first 30mins. It definitely took a while to warm up to me, but when it clicked it fucking clicked!
Drew: I was asking myself the same question throughout the movie about whether or not I want all movies to look like this. I'm all for it. I can only imagine what a really great drama with upper tier acting talent would look like at that frame rate would probably be pretty intense and really bring to light the difference between a good actor/actress and a great one.
Also as someone who stubbornly refuses to wear glasses 99.9% of the time I was amazed by how easy it was to follow the action sequences and notice all the details.

I think I'm gonna see The Hobbit on Friday morning. As a person who has to wear glasses 99.9% of the time I typically refuse watching 3D movies at all. Why? Well, apart from the fact that 3D is mostly a gimmick used to sell more tickets, and rarely enhances the actual film experience, there's really nothing much worse than wearing a pair of glasses over another pair of glasses. To loosely borrow a phrase from womp, 3D glasses are my nightmare.
That said, The Hobbit might just be the exception I suck it up for.

Because a marginal actor/actress uses lower frame rates to hide their deficiencies.
